It is caused by blockage and inflammation of glands or pores in your skin. Further, the medical term for the common form of acne is acne vulgaris.

What causes acne?

Firstly, acne is linked to hormone level changes. Therefore, it starts around puberty. Secondly, it can run in families. Thirdly, Propionibacterium acnes (P. acnes) causes acne. However, how often and how bad your acne depends on the type of bacteria on your skin. Equally important is your immune system which triggers a reaction to the bacteria. Finally, your hair follicles become clogged and collect.
