What are keloid shrinking injections?

Keloid shrinking injections are an effective treatment for reducing the size and discomfort of keloid scars. Studies show that between 50% and 80% of keloids shrink after corticosteroid injections. These injections work by delivering steroid medication directly into the keloid, which helps to flatten and soften the scar tissue over time. Patients typically notice improvements in the appearance and texture of their keloids after a series of injections, making it a popular choice for those seeking non-surgical options.

A non-invasive treatment option that avoids the risks associated with surgery.

Before and after

Are keloid shrinking injections painful?

During the procedure, a local anaesthetic is used in the injection to minimise discomfort. The corticosteroid is injected into the keloid, and multiple sessions may be required to achieve optimal results. Steroid injections are often effective for hypertrophic and keloid scars, helping to reduce their size and improve symptoms like pain and itching. If you’re struggling with keloid scars, consider booking a consultation to explore how keloid shrinking injections can help.

What to expect during your keloid scar consultation?

Your keloid scar consultation will be conducted by our expert dermatology doctor. Our doctor will assess your keloid, determine the most suitable treatment, and answer any questions you may have about your skin. If keloid shrinking injections are the best treatment, the procedure can be performed on the same day. Rest assured, all our clinics adhere to safety standards monitored by the General Medical Council and we are insured by Cosmetic Insure.

What causes a keloid scar growth?

Keloids form as a result of an overactive wound healing process where the body produces too much collagen at the site of a skin injury. This excessive collagen leads to the raised, thickened scar known as a keloid. Factors contributing to keloid growth include genetic predisposition, with a higher prevalence in individuals with darker skin tones. Keloids can develop after various skin injuries, including cuts, burns, surgical incisions, or even minor skin traumas like acne or piercings

Do keloid shrinking injections work for acne scars?

While steroid injections are effective for keloids, their use for acne scars is more specific. Acne scars come in various forms, including hypertrophic scars, which are raised but do not extend beyond the original injury site like keloids.

However, keloid scars, which grow beyond the original wound, can also form as a result of acne. In such cases, keloid shrinking injections injections can help to reduce the size and prominence of these scars. It’s important to note that steroid injections are not suitable for all types of acne scars.

Steroid injections for keloid treatment generally take several weeks to show noticeable results. The exact timeframe can vary based on the size and thickness of the keloid, as well as individual response to treatment. Typically, patients may begin to see improvements within 4 to 6 weeks after the initial injection. Multiple sessions are often required, spaced several weeks apart, to achieve optimal results.

Steroid injections for keloids can be an effective treatment but may come with some side effects. Common side effects include thinning of the skin at the injection site, which can make the skin appear more fragile or discoloured. There may also be lightening of the treated area, especially in darker skin tones.

You might also experience temporary redness, swelling, or a burning sensation immediately after the injection. These side effects are usually mild, but we will go through them in detail at your consultation in the clinic.

The number of steroid injections needed to treat keloids can vary based on individual factors such as the size and location of the keloid. Typically, patients require a series of injections, usually administered every 4 to 6 weeks. On average, 3 to 6 sessions are necessary, but the total number can differ depending on how the keloid responds to the treatment.
The entire course of treatment can span several months due to the spacing between injections. The effectiveness of the treatment is monitored over time, and adjustments may be made based on the keloid’s response. Some keloids may require more frequent or prolonged treatment if they do not respond well to initial sessions.

After receiving steroid injections to shrink keloids, it’s important to take certain precautions:

  1. Avoid Excessive Sun Exposure: Protect the treated area from direct sunlight to prevent pigmentation changes. Use sunscreen or cover the area if necessary.

  2. Avoid Irritation: Do not scratch, rub, or apply harsh chemicals to the treated area. Avoid tight clothing that may rub against the keloid.

  3. Avoid Vigorous Exercise: For a few days post-injection, refrain from activities that cause excessive sweating or friction around the treated area.

  4. Avoid Non-prescribed Topical Treatments: Do not use creams, ointments, or gels not recommended by the doctor.

  5. Follow Post-care Instructions: Adhere to any specific aftercare instructions given by your healthcare provider.
