URL: Dry, itchy or flaky skin is extremely common, but how do you know whether you're experiencing everyday dryness or something more? **Eczema and dry skin can look and feel similar**, particularly when symptoms are mild, but they aren't quite the same thing. While dry skin is often related to a **lack of moisture **and external factors, eczema is an **inflammatory skin condition** that can cause recurring periods of dryness, itching and irritation. Understanding the difference between eczema vs dry skin can help you recognise when simple skincare changes may be enough and when your symptoms might benefit from professional assessment. ## What Is Dry Skin? Dry skin, sometimes called xerosis, occurs when the skin doesn't retain enough moisture. It can leave the skin feeling **rough, tight, flaky or mildly itchy** and may affect almost anyone from time to time. Several everyday factors can contribute to dryness, including cold weather, central heating, frequent washing, hot showers and the use of harsh or fragranced skincare products. For many people, dry skin improves with **regular moisturising, gentler skincare **and avoiding products or habits that strip moisture from the skin. ## What Is Eczema? Eczema is an **inflammatory skin condition** that can cause dry, itchy and irritated skin. There are different types of eczema, with atopic eczema being one of the most common. Depending on the type and severity, symptoms may include **intense itching, inflammation, dryness, scaling or cracking**. Some people experience periods when their skin is relatively settled followed by flare-ups when symptoms become more noticeable. Eczema can affect people of all ages, and symptoms can vary considerably between individuals. ## How Can You Tell the Difference Between Eczema and Dry Skin? The two can overlap, which means it isn't always possible to distinguish them based on appearance alone. **Dry skin** tends to feel rough, tight or flaky and may cause mild itching. It can often be linked to environmental or skincare factors and may improve relatively quickly with regular moisturising and changes to your routine. **Eczema** is more likely to cause persistent itching and inflammation. The skin may become very dry, cracked or sore, and symptoms can repeatedly improve and then flare again. Depending on the type of eczema, particular areas of the body may also be more commonly affected. One useful distinction is that **eczema isn't simply very dry skin**. Although dryness is an important feature of eczema, inflammation and changes to the skin barrier also play a role. ## Why Is My Skin Suddenly Dry and Itchy? A sudden change doesn't necessarily mean you have eczema. Your skin can become dry or irritated because of **colder weather, indoor heating, frequent hand washing, hot showers or changes to your skincare routine**. Soaps, fragrances and other irritants may also affect the skin barrier. If you've recently introduced a new skincare or cosmetic product, it's worth considering whether the timing coincides with your symptoms. However, **persistent itching, recurring inflammation** or symptoms that aren't settling with appropriate skincare **may warrant further assessment.** ## Can Dry Skin Turn Into Eczema? Dry skin and eczema aren't simply different stages of the same condition, so having dry skin doesn't mean that it will eventually develop into eczema. However, the **skin barrier is particularly important in eczema**, and people with the condition commonly experience significant dryness. When the skin barrier isn't working as effectively, it can lose moisture more easily and become more vulnerable to irritation. This is one reason why moisturising and supporting the skin barrier often form an important part of eczema management. ## Does Eczema Always Itch? Itching is one of the most characteristic symptoms of eczema and can sometimes be significant enough to disturb sleep or daily activities. Scratching can then further irritate the skin, contributing to an **itch-scratch cycle** in which itching leads to scratching and scratching causes further inflammation and irritation. However, itchy skin can have many other causes, so itching alone doesn't confirm that you have eczema. ## Why Isn't My Dry Skin Improving with Moisturiser? Moisturising regularly can make a significant difference to straightforward dry skin, but persistent symptoms may need a closer look. If your skin remains **itchy, inflamed, cracked or uncomfortable despite regular moisturising**, there may be another factor contributing to your symptoms. Eczema is one possibility, but other skin conditions and irritants can produce similar symptoms. Rather than continually changing products, an assessment can be helpful if your skin isn't improving as expected. ## How Is Eczema Managed? Eczema management depends on the type of eczema, its severity and the areas affected. Regular **emollients and moisturisers** are commonly used to suppo... --- ## Acne Keloidalis Nuchae (AKN): Treatment for Scalp Bumps and Scarring URL: Sore or itchy bumps at the back of the head may be more than shaving rash. If they keep returning, they can sometimes be a sign of **acne keloidalis nuchae** (AKN). I am Dr Thuva, a dermatology doctor. In this guide, I explain why these bumps develop, how they can lead to scarring and which treatments may help. **In brief:** Acne keloidalis nuchae is a long-term condition affecting hair follicles at the back of the scalp and neck. Early assessment and treatment may help reduce inflammation and limit further scarring or hair loss. ## Tony’s Experience of Acne Keloidalis Treatment Tony had been troubled by persistent raised areas at the back of his scalp for many months. They had proved stubborn and had not settled by themselves. After examining his scalp, I discussed the likely diagnosis, what could aggravate it and the treatment options available. Tony chose a personalised plan that included three [corticosteroid injection](https://drderme.com/treatment/keloid-shrinking-injections/) sessions. At follow-up, most of the previously stubborn raised areas had become flatter and much less noticeable. I would describe this as a clear visible improvement rather than a cure. Tony’s response cannot predict how another person’s skin will respond, and further inflammation can still develop. ### Before-and-after Acne Keloidalis Nuchae (AKN) Treatment Acne keloidalis nuchae (AKN) before and after three treatment sessions, showing flatter raised areas at the back of the scalp. The back of Tony’s scalp before treatment and at follow-up after three treatment sessions. Most of the raised areas had visibly reduced. This is one person’s experience; results vary and cannot be guaranteed. ## What Is Acne Keloidalis Nuchae (AKN)? Acne keloidalis nuchae is an inflammatory condition affecting hair follicles around the nape of the neck and back of the scalp. It is also called **acne keloidalis** or **folliculitis keloidalis**. Despite the name, it is not ordinary acne. The raised areas can look like [keloid scars](https://drderme.com/treatment/keloid-scar-removal/), but they are not usually true keloids. They develop after repeated inflammation damages the hair follicles and surrounding skin. The condition is most common in men with Afro-textured or tightly curled hair, although it can affect people from other backgrounds. It is not contagious and is not simply caused by poor hygiene. ## What Does Acne Keloidalis Look Like? Early signs can include: - Small, firm or itchy bumps at the back of the scalp. - Spots or pustules around individual hairs. - Tenderness, crusting or bleeding after a haircut. - Ingrowing or tufted hairs. - Darker marks following inflammation. Without effective control, nearby bumps may join together and form thicker, raised areas. Established disease can lead to scarring and permanent hair loss in the affected skin. ## What Causes Acne Keloidalis? The exact cause is not fully understood. It appears to involve inflammation around the hair follicles, with several factors potentially contributing: - Very short haircuts or close shaving. - Ingrowing hairs. - Coarse or tightly curled hair. - Rubbing from tight collars, helmets or headwear. - Scratching or picking the affected area. - An individual’s immune and inflammatory response. These factors do not affect everybody in the same way. Developing acne keloidalis does not mean that you have done anything wrong. ## Which Acne Keloidalis Treatments May Help? Treatment depends on whether the condition is active, how much skin is involved and whether thick scarring has developed. Starting treatment earlier may make the inflammation easier to control and help protect nearby hair follicles. ### Reduce Irritation Simple changes can support medical treatment: - Avoid razor shaving and very close clipping over the affected area. - Leave slightly more hair at the back of the scalp. - Reduce rubbing from collars, hats and helmets. - Avoid picking, scratching or squeezing the bumps. These steps may reduce irritation but cannot guarantee that the condition will stop progressing. ### [Prescription](https://drderme.com/prescriptions/) Scalp Treatment Early or inflamed areas may be treated with [prescribed](https://drderme.com/prescriptions/) anti-inflammatory scalp treatments. An antimicrobial treatment may also be considered when pustules or a secondary infection are present. Some people with more active inflammation may need an oral antibiotic or another [prescribed medicine](https://drderme.com/prescriptions/). We recommend an [individual medical consultation.](https://partner-uk.pabau.com/online-bookings/drderme?groupCategory=0&category=111515&serviceType=0&services=3012381) ### Corticosteroid Injections For suitable raised or inflamed areas, small amounts of [corticosteroid](https://drderme.com/treatment/keloid-shrinking-injections/) medicine can be placed into the affected skin. People may credit a new diet, an oil, supplements or medical treatment for their progress. These experiences can be encouraging. They also need context because alopecia areata can improve naturally or after treatment. Regrowth is possible, but it is not the same as a permanent cure. I am Dr Thuva, a dermatology doctor with specialist training in hair and scalp conditions. Here, I explain why hair may grow back, which [treatments](https://drderme.com/treatment/alopecia-areata-injections/) may help and what a positive result can mean over time. **The short answer:** Although there is currently no permanent cure for alopecia areata, the hair follicles are usually preserved and regrowth is possible. Hair may grow back naturally or with [treatment](https://drderme.com/treatment/alopecia-areata-injections/), although further patches can still develop. ## Can Alopecia Areata Be Cured? Alopecia areata is an autoimmune condition. The body's immune system attacks growing hair follicles by mistake. The follicles are not usually destroyed. This means they may produce hair again. Regrowth can be partial or complete and may happen with or without treatment. The condition is different for each person. Some people have one episode and maintain their regrowth. Others develop further patches later. This is why I use the terms **hair regrowth** or **treatment response**. They describe the positive change accurately without promising that it will always be permanent. Hair regrowthA permanent cure Hair has started growing againThe condition has gone permanently May happen naturally or after treatmentNo permanent cure is currently known Can be partial or completeWould mean no future risk of hair loss Further patches may still appearAlopecia areata can return after regrowth ## Why Do People Say "They " I Cured My Alopecia Areata"? Recovery stories can offer hope. There are several reasons why someone may believe a remedy cured their alopecia areata. ### Hair can grow back naturally Alopecia areata is a non-scarring form of hair loss. Because the follicles remain in the skin, hair may begin growing again without treatment. If this happens after someone starts a remedy, they may reasonably believe the remedy caused it. Sometimes this will be uncertain. ### The condition can change over time Alopecia areata can move through periods of hair loss, stability and regrowth. Someone may improve after months of little change without having found a cure. ### Several remedies may be started together A person may change their diet, take supplements, use an oil and begin [medical treatment](https://drderme.com/treatment/alopecia-areata-injections/) at the same time. It is then difficult to know what affected the result. Online stories may not show what happened months or years later, so one person's experience cannot predict another person's result. ## Karl's Experience of Alopecia Areata Regrowth Karl attended Dr.Derme after living with alopecia areata for around two years. Treatments prescribed through his GP had not led to the improvement he had hoped for, and new patches were continuing to appear. I examined his hair and scalp using trichoscopy. We discussed the diagnosis and options for [localised patches.](https://drderme.com/treatment/alopecia-areata-injections/) Karl chose a personalised treatment plan. At follow-up, visible hair regrowth could be seen within the affected area. ### Karl's Success Story https://youtube.com/shorts/Q3aJpQF6KoM?si=HC1_t9ikICRzRGr0 Karl said: “I've been suffering with alopecia areata for around two years. I've been prescribed various things from my GP which seemed to be ineffective. I contacted Dr.Derme for treatment. I'm very happy with the progress and I'm starting to see some real hair coming through. The service is very professional and highly recommended.” _Karl's wording has been shortened for readability without changing its meaning. This is his personal experience; results vary and regrowth cannot be guaranteed._ ### Before-and-after Photographs “How I Cured My Alopecia Areata”: A Dermatologist Explains the Truth Karl's alopecia areata before treatment and the regrowth seen at follow-up. From my medical point of view, Karl's progress was encouraging. I would describe it as visible regrowth rather than a cure. Another person's response may be different. ## Which Alopecia Areata Treatments May Help? Treatment depends on how much hair is affected, how quickly it is changing, how long it has been present and which areas are involved. The most suitable approach will therefore be different for each person. ### Steroid treatments for the scalp The 2026 British Association of Dermatologists guideline recommends a potent or [very potent topical corticosteroid](https://drderme.com/prescriptions/) as a first-line treatment for scalp alopecia areata. It is usually ... --- ## Alopecia Areata: Why It Happens and How to Stop It Spreading URL: Finding a new patch of hair loss can be worrying. It may appear suddenly, even if your hair and scalp seemed healthy before. Alopecia areata is an autoimmune condition. It can stay limited to one or two small patches, spread to other areas or improve without treatment. There is no guaranteed way to stop alopecia areata spreading, but the right diagnosis and [treatment ](https://drderme.com/treatment/alopecia-areata-injections/)may reduce inflammation and help the hair grow back. I am Dr Thuva, a dermatology doctor with specialist training in hair and scalp conditions. In this guide, I explain what causes alopecia areata, whether it can spread, which treatments may help and what you can expect from regrowth. ## What Causes Alopecia Areata? Alopecia areata happens when the body’s immune system attacks healthy hair follicles by mistake. This causes inflammation around the follicles and interrupts normal hair growth. The hair follicles are not usually destroyed. This is why the condition is described as non-scarring hair loss and why the hair can grow back. We do not yet know exactly why the immune system starts attacking the follicles. It is likely to involve a mix of genetic and environmental factors. Around one in five people with alopecia areata has a family history of the condition. It is also linked with some other autoimmune conditions, but this does not mean that everyone with alopecia areata has another health problem. Patients often ask me whether stress caused their hair loss. Stress, illness and other life events may act as triggers in some people, but the evidence is not clear. Many people cannot identify any trigger at all. Alopecia areata is not your fault, it is not caused by poor hair care and it cannot be passed to another person. ## How to Stop Alopecia Areata Spreading There is no treatment that can guarantee alopecia areata will not spread. Its course is unpredictable. One patch may stay the same size, grow larger or be followed by new patches. An early medical assessment is useful because several conditions can cause patchy hair loss. I first check whether the pattern fits alopecia areata and look for signs that it is active. These may include short broken hairs, known as exclamation-mark hairs, around the edge of a patch. I also consider: - how much of the scalp or other areas are affected; - how quickly the hair loss is changing; - whether the eyebrows, eyelashes, beard or nails are involved; - previous episodes and treatment results; - the effect on confidence and wellbeing; and - any symptoms or medical history that suggest another condition. Photographs can provide a useful baseline for comparing spread and regrowth. [Blood tests](https://drderme.com/tests/hair-loss-blood-tests-birmingham-male-pattern-female/) are not routinely needed for every patient. I recommend them only when the history or examination suggests they may be helpful. ### Steroid Treatments for the Scalp Potent or very potent topical corticosteroids are a first-line treatment for alopecia areata affecting the scalp. They are usually applied once a day for three to six months under strict medical supervision and reviewed to check the response and look for side effects. These medicines reduce inflammation around the hair follicles. They must be prescribed and used correctly because prolonged or excessive use can thin the skin. ### [Steroid Injections](https://drderme.com/treatment/alopecia-areata-injections/) for Small Patches [Steroid injections](https://drderme.com/treatment/alopecia-areata-injections/) are a first-line option for adults with limited to moderate alopecia areata. I inject small amounts of corticosteroid medicine into the affected skin to reduce inflammation around the hair follicles. This treatment is most useful for a small number of clear patches on the scalp. It may also be considered for selected patches affecting the beard or eyebrows. Treatment does not work for everyone and regrowth cannot be guaranteed. If further sessions are suitable, they are commonly spaced around six to twelve weeks apart so I can assess the response and reduce the risk of side effects. The main risks include temporary discomfort, redness and local thinning or denting of the skin. Pigment changes can also occur, particularly in brown or black skin. I discuss the likely benefits and risks before recommending treatment. Steroid injections can encourage hair to grow within a treated patch, but they cannot guarantee that alopecia areata will not develop elsewhere. ### Treatment for Rapid or Widespread Hair Loss Rapid or widespread alopecia areata may need specialist hospital treatment. Options can include steroid tablets, contact immunotherapy, immune-suppressing medicines or licensed JAK inhibitors. ## Can Alopecia Areata Go Away? Yes, alopecia areata can go away and the hair can grow back. This may happen with treatment or on its own. The outlook varies from person to person. Regrowth is gene... --- ## Chemical Peels Explained: Benefits, Downtime & Common Myths URL: Chemical peels are one of the** **most **established professional skin treatments**, but they're also** commonly misunderstood**. The word peel can make people imagine layers of skin shedding, significant redness and days of downtime. In reality, chemical peels **vary considerably in strength and purpose**. Many modern superficial peels are relatively gentle, with** little visible peeling or downtime**, while still providing effective exfoliation and targeting specific skin concerns. From dullness and congestion to acne, pigmentation and uneven texture, the right chemical peel will be selected based on your skin needs. ## What Is a Chemical Peel? [A chemical peel](https://drderme.com/category/treatment-guide/chemical-peels-birmingham/) is a professional treatment that uses **carefully selected acids **or active ingredients to create** controlled exfoliation and encourage skin renewal.** There **isn't just one type** of chemical peel. Different ingredients and strengths can work at different depths and target different concerns, including: - [Dull or tired-looking skin](https://drderme.com/treatment/red-carpet-facial/) - Congestion and blocked pores - [Acne and breakouts](https://drderme.com/treatment/acne-chemical-peel/) - [Redness and rosacea](https://drderme.com/treatment/sensitive-skin-facial/) - Post-acne marks - [Uneven pigmentation](https://drderme.com/treatment/pigmentation-peel/) - Rough or uneven texture - Fine lines and signs of ageing The aim isn't simply to make your skin peel. Treatment is chosen according to your skin and the changes you're hoping to achieve. ## Are All Chemical Peels the Same Strength? **No**, and this is one of the **most important things to understand **about chemical peels. #### Superficial Peels Superficial or mild peels work **primarily on the outer layers **of the skin. They can help with dullness, congestion, uneven texture and certain types of pigmentation, often with minimal downtime. These are the peels that many patients are surprised by, as treatment can be **considerably gentler than the name suggests.** #### Medium or Deeper Peels Stronger peels penetrate **further into the skin **and may be considered for more **established concerns. **As treatment depth increases, so can the expected redness, peeling and recovery. **A stronger peel isn't automatically a better peel**. The appropriate strength depends on your skin, concern and desired outcome. ## What Are the Benefits of Chemical Peels? Different formulations can be selected for different skin concerns. #### ✨ Dull & Uneven Skin Removing accumulated dead skin cells can help the complexion appear brighter, smoother and more refreshed. #### 🫧 Congestion & Acne Certain peel ingredients can help with excess oil, blocked pores and breakouts, making them useful for acne-prone and congested skin. #### 🎯 Pigmentation & Post-Acne Marks Selected peels can target excess pigmentation and gradually improve the appearance of uneven skin tone and marks left behind by acne. #### 🧬 Texture & Fine Lines Encouraging exfoliation and skin renewal can help smooth rough texture and improve the appearance of superficial fine lines. ## Myth #1: Your Skin Has to Peel for the Treatment to Work **Not necessarily.** Despite the name, visible peeling **isn't a measure of whether a chemical peel has worked.** Some superficial peels may cause little more than mild dryness or light flaking, while stronger treatments can produce more noticeable peeling. Your response will depend on the peel used and your individual skin. A treatment can **still provide effective exfoliation** without sheets of skin visibly peeling away afterwards. #### Myth #2: Chemical Peels Are Too Harsh for Sensitive Skin Chemical peels aren't automatically aggressive treatments. There are many formulations and strengths available, and **[some gentler peels ](https://drderme.com/treatment/sensitive-skin-facial/)may be suitable for more sensitive ski**n. However, suitability depends on the individual, and certain skin conditions or sensitivities may mean a peel isn't appropriate. This is why your skin should be assessed before treatment rather than simply choosing a peel based on its popularity or strength. ## Myth #3: You'll Need to Hide Away Afterwards Not with every peel. Stronger treatments can involve noticeable peeling and downtime, but **many mild and superficial chemical peels require very little recovery.** Depending on your treatment, you may experience** temporary redness, tightness, dryness or mild flaking. **You'll be advised what to expect beforehand and how to look after your skin afterwards. **Daily sun protection is essential** following a chemical peel. ## Myth #4: One Peel Will Fix Everything A single peel may leave your skin feeling smoother or looking brighter, but concerns such as acne, pigmentation and uneven texture tend to **benefit from a course of treatments alongside appropriate home skincare.** How many tr... --- ## How to Repair a Damaged Skin Barrier: Signs & What Can Help URL: Your skin barrier plays an important role in** keeping moisture in and protecting your skin from the outside **environment. When it isn't functioning as effectively as it should, you may notice that your skin suddenly feels **dry, tight, sensitive or irritated,** even when using products that normally don't cause a problem. The phrase_ “damaged skin barrier”_ is used frequently in skincare, but what does it actually mean? And more importantly, what can you do to support your skin while it recovers? Here are some of the common signs of a compromised skin barrier, what can contribute to it and how simplifying your routine may help. ## What Is Your Skin Barrier? The outermost layer of your skin, known as the **stratum corneum**, forms an important part of its protective barrier. It consists of skin cells surrounded by lipids, including **ceramides, cholesterol and fatty acids.** Together, these structures **help the skin retain moisture while providing protection **against irritants and the external environment. When this barrier is disrupted, the skin can **lose water more easily and become more vulnerable to irritation.** This can leave previously comfortable skin feeling dry, sensitive or reactive. ## What Are the Signs of a Damaged Skin Barrier? A compromised skin barrier can present differently from person to person, but common signs can include: - Dryness or flaking - Tight or uncomfortable skin - Redness or irritation - Increased sensitivity - Itching - Rough or uneven texture - Products suddenly stinging or burning when applied You may notice several of these changes at once, particularly after introducing new products or using too many active ingredients. However, **these symptoms aren't exclusive to a damaged skin barrier.** Conditions such as eczema, rosacea and contact dermatitis can cause similar symptoms, which is why persistent or significant skin changes shouldn't automatically be blamed on your skincare routine. ## What Causes a Damaged Skin Barrier? **Sometimes it's not one product** causing the problem, but too much happening within your routine at once. **Over-exfoliating is a common example.** Frequently combining exfoliating acids, scrubs, retinoids or other active ingredients may leave some people's skin increasingly dry and irritated. Other factors that can affect the skin barrier include **harsh cleansers, frequent washing, very hot water** and environmental conditions. Even ingredients that can be beneficial when used appropriately may cause irritation if they're introduced too quickly or used more frequently than your skin tolerates. ## Can Too Much Skincare Damage Your Skin Barrier? Potentially, yes. **Long skincare routines aren't necessarily better **for your skin. Problems can arise when several potent active ingredients are layered together without considering how frequently they're being used or whether they're appropriate for your skin. For example, combining multiple exfoliating products with a retinoid may be more than some skin types can comfortably tolerate. If your skin has suddenly become sensitive, **looking at everything you're currently applying** can be more useful than immediately adding another product to try to correct the problem. [Noticing redness alongside sensitivity? Your skincare routine could be contributing. Read our guide to whether your skincare could be causing redness to learn more.](https://drderme.com/skincare-routine-causing-redness-top-tips/) ## How Can You Help Repair Your Skin Barrier? If your skin has become irritated after overusing skincare products,** simplifying your routine** can give it an opportunity to recover. Consider temporarily reducing potentially irritating active ingredients and focusing on the basics:** gentle cleansing, moisturising and sun protection.** A moisturiser containing ingredients that support hydration and the skin barrier may be helpful. Ingredients commonly found in barrier-supporting skincare include **ceramides, glycerin, hyaluronic acid and fatty acids.** **Avoid aggressively scrubbing away flaky skin **or repeatedly exfoliating it. Although exfoliation might seem like the obvious solution to roughness, it can potentially make irritation worse when the skin is already compromised. ## How Long Does It Take to Repair a Damaged Skin Barrier? There isn't one set timeframe. How quickly your skin settles will **depend on what caused the irritation,** how significant it is and your individual skin. Mild irritation after overusing a product may improve relatively quickly once the trigger is removed, whereas more significant or persistent symptoms may take longer. Rather than focusing on a particular number of days, **pay attention to how your skin feels.** Reduced tightness, sensitivity, flaking and discomfort can all be signs that it is becoming more settled. ## When Can You Start Using Active Skincare Again? Once your skin feels comfortable again, you don't necessarily need to abandon a... --- ## Medical Tattoo Removal: What It Is, How It Works & What to Expect URL: Medical and cosmetic tattooing can be used for many reasons, from **restoring the appearance** of the areola following breast surgery to **disguising scars** or **creating cosmetic enhancements**. However, there may come a time when the pigment is no longer wanted, or the appearance of the tattoo has changed. [Medical tattoo removal](https://drderme.com/treatment/laser-tattoo-removal-birmingham/) uses** laser technology to target unwanted tattoo pigment**, which the body can then gradually clear over time. Whether you are **considering removing or reducing **a medical tattoo, micropigmentation or another form of cosmetic tattooing, understanding the process can help you know what to expect. ## What Is a Medical Tattoo? Medical tattooing, sometimes called **medical micropigmentation**, involves **placing pigment into the skin to alter or restore **its appearance. It can be used for purposes such as: - Areola and nipple tattooing following breast surgery - Scar camouflage - Skin camouflage - Reconstructive or corrective tattooing Although medical tattoos are **designed to be long-lasting**, their appearance can change. Pigment may fade, change colour** **or no longer provide the desired result. ## Why Might Someone Consider Medical Tattoo Removal? There are many reasons someone may consider [medical or cosmetic tattoo removal.](https://drderme.com/treatment/laser-tattoo-removal-birmingham/) The tattoo may have** faded or changed colour,** the **shape or positioning** may no longer be desirable, or the individual may simply decide they** no longer want it.** Complete removal isn't always the aim. In some cases, laser treatment may be used to** reduce or lighten existing pigment,** for example, before corrective or replacement tattooing. ## How Does Medical Tattoo Removal Work? Laser tattoo removal works by delivering **controlled laser energy into the tattoo pigment** within the skin. The pigment **absorbs** the energy and is** broken down** into smaller particles. The body's natural processes can then **gradually clear** these particles following treatment. Different pigments respond differently to laser energy, which is particularly important with medical and cosmetic tattoos. They may contain** different pigments or mixtures of colours **compared with traditional decorative tattoo inks. For this reason, the** tattoo and skin should be carefully assessed** before treatment begins. ## Can All Medical Tattoos Be Removed? Not every medical or cosmetic tattoo will respond to laser treatment in the same way, and complete removal cannot be guaranteed. Factors that can affect treatment include: - The colour and type of pigment - How deeply the pigment has been placed - The amount of pigment present - The age of the tattoo - Previous treatments - Individual skin characteristics Some medical and cosmetic pigments can also **react differently when exposed to laser energy.** An assessment allows your practitioner to examine the area and **discuss whether treatment may be suitable** and what you can realistically expect. ## How Many Sessions Does Medical Tattoo Removal Take? There is **no set number of sessions** required for medical tattoo removal. Laser tattoo removal is normally a** gradual process**, and multiple appointments may be necessary. The number of treatments required depends on factors such as the** pigment, depth, size** of the tattoo and how your body responds. Sessions also need to be** appropriately spaced to allow the skin to recover** and the body time to process the fragmented pigment. A more personalised estimate can therefore be provided following an individual assessment. ## Is Medical Tattoo Removal Different from Regular Tattoo Removal? The basic principle is the same: laser energy is used to target unwanted pigment within the skin. However, medical tattoo removal **can require additional consideration **because the pigments used may differ from those found in traditional tattoo inks. Medical tattoos may also have been placed on skin that has **previously undergone surgery** or **developed scarring.** These factors make careful assessment particularly important before proceeding with treatment. ## What Happens During a Medical Tattoo Removal Consultation? Before treatment, your practitioner will **assess your skin and the tattoo itself. **You'll have the opportunity to discuss why you are considering removal and what you would like to achieve. Your consultation may cover your medical history, previous treatments, expected results, potential risks and the approximate number of sessions that may be needed. Where appropriate, a** test patch** will be performed before proceeding with full treatment. ## Can a Medical Tattoo Be Lightened Rather Than Removed? **Yes**. For some people, the aim may be to lighten a medical or cosmetic tattoo rather than remove it completely. Reducing the intensity of the existing pigment may, for example, be considered before **correcti... --- ## Can Scalp Micropigmentation (SMP) Be Removed? Everything You Need to Know URL: Scalp micropigmentation (SMP) has become an increasingly popular solution for **creating the appearance of fuller hair and camouflaging hair loss. **While many people are delighted with their results, there are times when patients decide they'd like their SMP removed or faded. Whether your hairline no longer suits your appearance, the pigment has changed over time or you're planning a correction, laser treatment can often help. In many cases, **SMP can be significantly faded or removed** using the same principles as [laser tattoo removal.](https://drderme.com/treatment/laser-tattoo-removal-birmingham/) In this guide, we'll explain how SMP laser removal works, why patients choose treatment and what you can expect throughout the process. ## Can Laser Remove Scalp Micropigmentation? **Yes**, in many cases, laser treatment can successfully remove or significantly fade scalp micropigmentation. Because SMP uses pigment placed within the skin, it **responds to laser treatment in a similar way to traditional tattoos.** The laser delivers carefully **controlled energy that breaks the pigment into tiny particles**, allowing your body's natural immune system to gradually clear them away over time. Like tattoo removal, SMP removal is usually a gradual process, with multiple treatments often required to achieve the desired result. Although the treatment principles are very similar, there are some important differences between removing scalp micropigmentation and decorative tattoos. [Want to understand how laser removes the pigment? Our guide to How Laser Tattoo Removal Works explains the treatment process in more detail.](https://drderme.com/laser-tattoo-removal-birmingham-explained/) ## Why Do People Choose SMP Removal? There are many reasons why someone may decide to [remove or fade ](https://drderme.com/can-you-remove-part-of-a-tattoo-or-fade-it-for-a-cover-up/)their scalp micropigmentation. #### A Hairline That No Longer Looks Natural Tastes and hairstyles change over time. A hairline that once looked appropriate may begin to appear too low, too sharp or no longer match your natural hair loss pattern. #### Pigment Has Changed Colour Over time, some pigments may fade or develop a blue, grey or other unwanted tone, particularly if they were placed using unsuitable pigments or techniques. #### Dissatisfaction with the Original Treatment Some patients are unhappy with the density, placement or overall appearance of their SMP and wish to remove or lighten it before having it corrected. #### Preparing for a New SMP Treatment Complete removal isn't always necessary. Many patients choose to fade their existing SMP before having a new treatment performed, allowing the practitioner to create a more natural-looking result. #### Before a Hair Transplant In some cases, reducing or removing existing SMP may be recommended before hair transplant surgery or as part of an overall hair restoration plan. ## How Does Scalp Micropigmentation Laser Removal Work? [Laser SMP removal](https://drderme.com/treatment/laser-tattoo-removal-birmingham/) follows the same principles as laser tattoo removal. #### 🎯 Targets the Pigment The laser selectively targets the pigment beneath the skin while leaving the surrounding tissue unaffected. #### 🧬 Natural Clearance Once the pigment has been broken into smaller particles, your body's immune system gradually removes it over the following weeks. #### 📈 Progressive Fading Results develop gradually over a series of treatments, allowing the pigment to fade in a controlled and predictable way. ## How Many Treatments Will I Need? There isn't a fixed number of treatments for SMP removal. The number of sessions depends on several factors, including: - The depth of the pigment. - The colour and type of pigment used. - The density of the treatment. - How long ago the SMP was performed. - Your body's natural response to treatment. During your consultation, we'll assess your scalp and **provide a personalised treatment plan **based on your individual goals. ## Is SMP Easier to Remove Than a Traditional Tattoo? In many cases, yes, but not always. Scalp micropigmentation is **often placed more superficially** within the skin than decorative tattoos, which may allow it to respond well to laser treatment. However, every case is different. The **type of pigment** used, the **depth of placement **and the number of **previous SMP sessions** can all influence how quickly the pigment fades. ## Will Laser Removal Damage My Hair? This is one of the most common concerns we hear. Laser treatment is** designed to target the pigment **within the skin rather than the hair itself. When performed using appropriate settings by experienced practitioners, laser SMP removal is intended to remove unwanted pigment while** preserving the surrounding scalp and existing hair.** During your consultation, we'll assess your scalp and discuss any individual factors that may influence your treatment. ## ... --- ## Choosing an Allergy Blood Test: ALEX3 vs Individual Testing URL: If you're considering allergy testing, one of the first questions you're likely to ask is:_ what allergens can an allergy blood test detect?_ The answer depends on the type of allergy test you choose. At Dr.Derme, we offer both the **[ALEX3 Allergy Test,](https://drderme.com/tests/comprehensive-alex3-food-environmental-allergy-testing/)** which screens for a wide range of allergens in a single blood sample, and [**individual allergy blood testing**](https://drderme.com/tests/individual-allergen-allergy-blood-test/), which allows you to select one or more specific allergens based on your symptoms or concerns. In this guide, we'll explain what each test covers, how they differ, and how to choose the most appropriate option for your needs. ## Understanding Your Allergy Testing Options **Both tests measure IgE antibodies,** which are produced by the immune system in response to certain allergens. However, they are designed for different situations. #### ALEX³ Allergy Test ✔️ Tests up to 300 allergens and allergen components ✔️ Provides a broad overview of common allergies ✔️ May be suitable when the trigger is unclear ✔️ Includes allergen extracts and molecular components #### Individual Allergy Testing ✔️ Tests one or more selected allergens ✔️ Offers a more targeted approach ✔️ May be suitable when a specific allergen is suspected ✔️ Provides access to a wide range of individual allergen tests In summary: ALEX³ may be more suitable when you want a **broader overview,** while individual testing may be more appropriate when you already have a **particular allergen in mind.** ## What Allergens Are Included in Both Tests? Many of the most common allergy triggers can be assessed using either ALEX3 or individual allergy testing. #### 🌿 Pollens Both tests include many common seasonal pollens, including: - Grass pollens such as Timothy grass, Bermuda grass and Rye grass - Tree pollens including Birch, Alder, Oak and Olive - Weed pollens such as Mugwort, Ragweed and Ribwort Plantain These allergens are commonly associated with seasonal hay fever symptoms. #### 🏡 House Dust Mites & Indoor Allergens Both testing options can assess common indoor allergens, including: - House dust mites - Storage mites - Cat dander - Dog dander - Horse - Rabbit - Mouse and rat allergens - Moulds Testing is available for several common moulds, including: - Alternaria - Aspergillus fumigatus - Cladosporium - Penicillium These allergens may contribute to year-round allergy symptoms in some individuals. #### 🍎 Food Allergens Both tests include many commonly requested food allergens, such as: - Fruits - Vegetables - Nuts and seeds - Dairy products - Eggs - Fish and shellfish - Meat - Cereals and grains - Legumes This makes both options suitable for investigating many suspected food allergies. #### 🐝 Insect & Venom Allergens Testing is also available for several insect and venom allergens, including: - Honey bee - Common wasp - Fire ant - Cockroach ## What Additional Allergens Are Included in ALEX3? One of the key advantages of the [ALEX3 Allergy Test ](https://drderme.com/alex3-allergy-test-what-is-it-comprehensive-blood-test/)is that it includes **both allergen extracts and molecular allergen components,** providing a more** comprehensive overview** of sensitisation patterns. In addition to many common environmental and food allergens, ALEX3 includes selected molecular markers and specialised allergens that are not routinely offered as individual allergen tests. These include examples such as: - Alpha-Gal - Tree of Heaven - Arizona Cypress - Paper Mulberry - Selected dog allergen components - Numerous allergen molecules that help distinguish between genuine allergy and cross-reactivity This broad approach makes ALEX3 particularly useful **when symptoms involve multiple possible triggers **or when a more comprehensive assessment is appropriate. ## What Can Be Tested with Individual Allergy Testing? [Individual allergy testing](https://drderme.com/individual-allergy-testing-uk-targeted-approach/) offers **exceptional flexibility** and allows testing for a much **wider range of specific allergens** when there is a particular clinical suspicion. Examples include: #### 🌿 Additional Pollens A wider selection of individual: - Grass pollens - Tree pollens - Weed pollens including less common species not routinely included in broad screening panels. #### 🐦 Bird Allergens Individual testing is available for a variety of bird-related allergens, including: - Budgerigar - Canary - Pigeon - Parrot - Duck - Goose - Chicken feathers and droppings #### 💊 Drug Allergens Selected medications can also be tested individually, including: - Penicillin - Amoxicillin - Ampicillin - Cefaclor - Chlorhexidine #### 💼 Occupational Allergens Individual allergy testing is available for a range of workplace and occupational allergens, including: - Latex - Formaldehyde - Isocyanates - Cotton seed - Sunflower seed - Additional ... --- ## Tretinoin vs Retinal vs Retinol: What's the Difference? URL: If you're researching** vitamin A skincare**, you've probably come across tretinoin, retinal and retinol. While they're all **part of the same family of ingredients,** they differ in strength, how quickly they work and who they may be most suitable for. Understanding these differences can help you make informed decisions about your skincare, whether you're looking to **improve acne, reduce pigmentation or soften the visible signs of ageing.** In this guide, we'll explain how each ingredient works and why choosing the right retinoid isn't simply about selecting the strongest option. If you're specifically looking at prescription retinoids for acne, read our guide to Prescription Retinoids for Acne: Tretinoin, Adapalene & Aklief Explained. ## What Are Retinoids? Retinoids are vitamin A derivatives that **encourage your skin to renew itself more efficiently.** They are widely used in dermatology and [medical-grade skincare](https://drderme.com/our-products/) because they can help improve a variety of skin concerns. Retinoids work by: - Increasing skin cell turnover. - Helping to keep pores clear. - Stimulating collagen production. - Improving skin texture and tone. - Reducing the appearance of fine lines and pigmentation. Although tretinoin, retinal and retinol **all work towards similar goals, **the way they reach that point is slightly different. ## How Do Tretinoin, Retinal and Retinol Compare? The biggest difference between these ingredients is **how much work your skin needs to do** before they become active. #### 💊 Tretinoin Tretinoin is a **prescription-only retinoid **and is already in its active form. This means it can begin working as soon as it is applied to the skin. Because of its potency, tretinoin is commonly prescribed for acne, post-acne pigmentation and visible signs of ageing. It is also more likely to cause dryness and irritation when treatment begins, so it should **always be used under professional guidance.** #### ✨ Retinal (Retinaldehyde) Retinal** sits between retinol and tretinoin **in terms of strength. Before becoming active, retinal only needs** **one conversion step within the skin to become retinoic acid,** **making it **more potent than retinol while often remaining well tolerated.** Medical-grade retinal products are often recommended for patients who want **noticeable skin improvements but are not suitable for prescription tretinoin.** #### 🌿 Retinol Retinol is one of the** most recognised vitamin A ingredients **in skincare. Unlike tretinoin, retinol requires multiple conversion steps within the skin before it becomes active. As a result, it **generally works more gradually** and is often a suitable starting point for **people who are new to vitamin A **products. Although gentler, consistent use can still help improve skin texture, pigmentation and the early signs of ageing. ## Which Works Fastest? Because of the way these ingredients are processed within the skin, **they generally work at different speeds.** While tretinoin is generally the most potent, quicker isn't always better. Your skin's ability to tolerate treatment consistently is equally important. #### 💊 Tretinoin **Already active**, so it begins working immediately after application. ✨ Retinal Requires **one conversion step **before becoming active, allowing it to work relatively efficiently. 🌿 Retinol Requires **several conversion steps**, so improvements tend to develop more gradually over time. ## Which Retinoid Is Best for Different Skin Concerns? Different retinoids may be more suitable depending on your individual concerns. #### Acne Prescription tretinoin is commonly used for acne because it helps prevent blocked pores and promotes healthy skin renewal. Retinal may also be suitable for milder congestion or maintenance skincare. #### Fine Lines & Wrinkles All three ingredients encourage collagen production, helping to soften the appearance of fine lines over time. The main difference is how quickly results may develop. #### Pigmentation Retinoids can help improve uneven skin tone by encouraging the skin's natural renewal process. Prescription tretinoin often produces the most noticeable improvements, while retinal and retinol provide more gradual results with continued use. #### Sensitive Skin If you have sensitive skin or are new to vitamin A, starting with a gentler retinoid may allow your skin to build tolerance before progressing to stronger treatments if needed. ## Does Stronger Always Mean Better? Not necessarily. While stronger retinoids can deliver **more noticeable improvements, **they can also **increase the likelihood of dryness, peeling and irritation,** particularly when first introduced. The most successful treatment isn't always the strongest; **it's the one your skin can tolerate consistently.** Introducing a retinoid gradually, using a moisturiser to[ support your skin barrier ](https://drderme.com/skincare-routine-causing-redness-top-tips/)and wear... --- ## Soothing Hydro Mist URL: A soothing facial mist that restores hydration, immediately calms visible redness and supports skin’s protective barrier. URL: For many people, the end of active acne doesn't always mean the end of their skin concerns. [Acne scars](https://drderme.com/how-to-get-rid-of-acne-scars-dermatologist-guide/) can remain long after breakouts have cleared, affecting **skin texture, confidence and overall complexion**. While skincare products may help improve the appearance of the skin, they are often unable to address deeper changes caused by scarring. [Laser treatment](https://drderme.com/treatment/laser-clinic-edgbaston-birmingham/) is one of several professional options available to help improve certain types of acne scars. By stimulating the skin's **natural healing response **and **encouraging collagen production**, laser treatments can help improve skin texture and soften the appearance of scars over time. At Dr.Derme, we provide personalised treatment plans tailored to your skin type, scar characteristics and treatment goals. ## How Do Acne Scars Form? Acne scars develop when **inflammation damages the skin and the collagen** that supports it. As the skin heals, it may produce either** too little or too much collagen**, leading to permanent changes in the skin's texture. Not all acne leaves scars, and **not all scars are the same**. The depth, severity and duration of acne can all influence how the skin heals, which is why professional assessment is important when considering treatment. ## How Can Laser Treatment Help Acne Scarring? Laser treatment works by **delivering controlled energy **into the skin, **encouraging the body's natural healing processes** and collagen remodelling. #### Stimulates Collagen Production Collagen is an important protein that** helps keep the skin firm and smooth**. Laser treatment stimulates collagen production beneath the skin, supporting gradual improvement** **in scarred areas over time. #### Improves Skin Texture Rather than simply treating the surface of the skin, laser treatments **work deeper within the tissue** to help improve uneven texture caused by certain acne scars. #### Supports Gradual Skin Renewal **Results do not happen overnight**. As new collagen develops and the skin naturally renews itself, many patients notice gradual improvements in skin texture and overall skin quality. ## Which Acne Scars Can Laser Treatment Help Improve? Laser treatment may be suitable for improving the appearance of several types of acne scars, particularly those that cause uneven skin texture. Many patients with **rolling scars, boxcar scars or general textural irregularities** may benefit from laser treatment. However, suitability depends on several factors, including: - The type of acne scar - Scar depth - Skin type - Previous treatments - Individual treatment goals Because **every patient's skin is different**, a consultation is essential to determine the most appropriate treatment approach. ## What Results Can You Expect? Laser treatment **aims to improve the appearance** of acne scars rather than remove them completely. Most patients notice gradual improvements as the skin continues to produce new collagen following each treatment. Potential benefits may include: - Smoother skin texture - Softer-looking acne scars - Improved skin quality - A more even complexion - Increased confidence in the skin's appearance The degree of **improvement varies between individuals** and depends on the severity of the scarring and how the skin responds to treatment. ## How Many Laser Treatments Might Be Needed? Most patients require a** course of treatments to achieve the best possible results**. The number of sessions recommended depends on factors such as the severity of the scarring, the treatment area and your individual skin response. Because collagen remodelling continues between appointments, improvements develop gradually over time. Your practitioner will recommend a **personalised treatment plan **based on your skin** **and treatment goals. ## Can Laser Treatment Be Combined With Other Treatments? Yes. In many cases, **the most effective approach **to acne scarring involves combining different treatments to address multiple aspects of the skin. Depending on your individual concerns, your personalised treatment plan may also include: - [Microneedling](https://drderme.com/treatment/exosomes-microneedling/) - [Chemical peels](https://drderme.com/treatment/chemical-peels-birmingham-acne-pigmentation-redness/) - [Medical-grade skincare](https://drderme.com/our-products/) - Prescription treatments, where appropriate Combining treatments **can help target different layers of the skin **and support overall skin improvement, although the most suitable approach will vary from person to person. ## Is Laser Treatment Suitable for Everyone? Laser treatment is not always the most appropriate option for every patient or every type of acne scar. Factors such as **active acne, skin type, medical history and previous treatments **all play an important role in determining suitability. **A professio... --- ## Anti-Aging High Potency Retinol Program URL: An advanced skincare program designed to reduce the look of deeper lines and wrinkles, uneven skin tone and thinning skin.   **Benefits** - Helps reduce the appearance of deeper lines and wrinkles. - Minimises the appearance of hyperpigmentation and ‘age spots’. - Promotes a more even-looking skin tone. - Aids in strengthening the skin by keeping hydration at the proper level. - Help maintain face care results achieved with lasers or medical treatments **Program Contents** [Gentle Cleanser](https://drderme.com/products/gentle-cleanser/) – 60 mL / 2 Fl. Although the **results aren't designed to last forever**, pigment can sometimes remain visible for much longer than expected – and it doesn't always fade evenly. Perhaps your brows have changed colour, the shape no longer suits you, or you're considering having them redone. Whatever your reason, microblading removal may be an option for reducing unwanted pigment. [Laser treatment ](https://drderme.com/treatment/microblading-semi-permanent-makeup-removal-birmingham/)can be used for some microbladed brows, but **cosmetic pigments can behave differently from traditional tattoo inks**. Here's what you should know before considering treatment. ## Why Doesn't Microblading Always Fade Away? Microblading is **often described as semi-permanent** because the pigment gradually fades. However, this doesn't mean it will completely disappear within a particular timeframe. How long it remains visible can be influenced by the **pigment used, its depth, previous top-ups **and individual skin characteristics. As pigment fades, its appearance can also change, with some **brows developing warmer or cooler tones** over time. This can lead some people to consider removal rather than continuing to wait for the pigment to fade naturally. ## Why Do People Have Microblading Removed? There are several reasons you might consider microblading removal. The** shape or style **may no longer suit you, the pigment may have **faded unevenly** or** changed colour**, or previous top-ups may have left the brows **darker than you would like.** You may also want to **change your brow shape** or **reduce the existing pigment** before having a new cosmetic brow treatment. In these circumstances, complete removal isn't necessarily the goal. ## Can Microblading Be Removed with Laser? Some microblading pigments may be suitable for[ laser removal.](https://drderme.com/treatment/microblading-semi-permanent-makeup-removal-birmingham/) Laser treatment **delivers energy that is absorbed by pigment** within the skin,** breaking it into smaller particles**. The body can then gradually process the fragmented pigment, allowing the microblading to fade over time. However, microblading pigments **can contain mixtures of different colours and ingredients.** They therefore don't necessarily respond to laser energy in the same way as conventional tattoo ink. An **individual assessment is important** before determining whether laser treatment may be appropriate. ## Can Microblading Change Colour During Laser Removal? This is an important consideration when treating cosmetic brow pigments. Some pigments can undergo a **colour change when exposed to laser energy**. A pigment that appears brown, for example, may contain other colours that become more visible as different components respond to treatment. This can affect how the removal process progresses and may influence subsequent treatments. Because the exact composition of cosmetic pigment isn't always known, a **test patch** is always performed before treating the full brow. This allows the response of both the pigment and skin to be assessed first. ## Removing Microblading vs Lightening It Microblading removal doesn't always mean trying to eliminate every visible trace of pigment. If you're planning to have your brows redone, lightening the existing pigment may provide **greater flexibility when choosing a new shape or colour. **Alternatively, you may simply want to make unwanted or discoloured microblading less noticeable. Your desired outcome can be discussed before treatment so that this can be considered when planning your course. ## How Long Does Microblading Removal Take? Microblading removal is a gradual process, and the number of treatments required **varies between individuals.** Factors such as the pigment's colour, composition and depth, the amount present and previous top-ups can all influence how it responds. Time is also left between laser sessions to allow the skin to recover and the treated pigment to continue fading. For this reason, **an exact number of sessions cannot be guaranteed **before treatment begins. ## Is Microblading the Same as an Eyebrow Tattoo? Not quite. Microblading traditionally uses a **handheld tool to create individual, hair-like strokes**. Cosmetic eyebrow tattoo techniques such as powder and ombré brows, however, are generally created using a **machine to produce a more shaded effect.** Differences in application and pigment can influence the removal process. [If you have powder, ombré or another type of machine-applied cosmetic brow tattoo, see our dedicated guide to **eyebrow tattoo removal**.](https://drderme.com/eyebrow-tattoo-microblading-removal-what-to-expect/) ## Frequently Asked Questions About Microblading Removal #### Will microblading eventually disappear on its own? Microblading is designed to fade, but how quickly and completely... --- ## Pico vs Q-Switched Laser for Tattoo Removal: Which Is Right for You? URL: If you're researching [laser tattoo removal](https://drderme.com/treatment/laser-tattoo-removal-birmingham/), you've probably come across two of the most common technologies: **Pico lasers** and **Q-switched lasers**. With so much information online, it's easy to wonder whether one is significantly better than the other. The truth is, **both technologies have been used successfully **to remove unwanted tattoos. The best choice depends on your tattoo, skin type and treatment goals **rather than simply choosing the newest laser **available. In this guide, we'll explain the differences between Pico and Q-switched lasers, what they have in common and **why a professional assessment is often more important** than the technology itself. ## What Is a Q-Switched Laser? Q-switched lasers have been used for tattoo removal for many years and remain **one of the most established technologies **available. They work by delivering **short bursts of laser energy** into the tattoo, **breaking the ink into tiny particles** that are gradually removed by the body's natural immune system. This makes them **suitable for treating many professional and amateur tattoos** across a range of colours. Because tattoo removal is a gradual process, multiple treatment sessions are usually needed to achieve the best possible results. ## What Is a Pico Laser? Pico lasers are a **newer development in laser tattoo removal** technology. Like Q-switched lasers, they work by breaking tattoo ink into smaller particles so the body can naturally remove them. The main difference is that **Pico lasers deliver energy in much shorter pulses**. For some tattoos, this may improve treatment efficiency, but** results still depend on many other factors**, including the tattoo itself and how your body responds to treatment. ## How Do They Compare? Rather than asking which laser is "better", it's often more helpful to understand what they have in common. #### ✔ Q-Switched Lasers - A well-established technology with many years of clinical use. - Effective for many professional and amateur tattoos. - Suitable for a wide range of tattoo colours. - Multiple treatments are usually required. #### ✔ Pico Lasers - A newer laser technology using shorter pulse durations. - Effective for many professional and amateur tattoos. - May offer advantages for some tattoos and ink colours. - Multiple treatments are still usually required. **Both technologies are designed to break down tattoo ink safely,** and both require a personalised treatment plan to achieve the best results. ## Does Pico Laser Remove Tattoos Faster? This is one of the most common questions patients ask. While Pico lasers **may reduce the number of treatments for some** tattoos, this isn't always the case. The speed of** tattoo removal depends on far more than the laser** itself. Factors that influence treatment include: 1. Tattoo size. 2. Ink colours. 3. Professional or amateur tattoo. 4. Ink depth and density. 5. Tattoo location. 6. Your body's natural healing response. For many patients, **these factors have a greater impact on the treatment journey** than the type of laser being used. ## Which Laser Works Best for Different Tattoo Colours? Tattoo **colour is one of the many considerations **when planning treatment. **Black ink generally responds well** to laser treatment because it absorbs laser energy effectively. Other colours, such as green, blue and turquoise, can sometimes take longer to fade, regardless of the technology used. Every tattoo is different, which is why **your practitioner will assess the colours, age and characteristics **of your tattoo before recommending a treatment plan. ## Is One Laser Safer Than the Other? Both Pico and Q-switched lasers have** established safety profiles** when used appropriately by trained practitioners. The safety of your treatment **depends less on the name of the laser **and more on: - A thorough consultation. - Appropriate treatment settings. - Your skin type and tattoo characteristics. - Following the recommended aftercare. Choosing an experienced clinic helps ensure treatment is both safe and tailored to your individual needs. ## Frequently Asked Questions #### Is Pico laser better than Q-switched laser? Not necessarily. Both technologies can achieve excellent tattoo removal results. The most suitable option depends on your tattoo, skin type and treatment goals. #### Which laser removes tattoos faster? Treatment speed varies between individuals. Factors such as tattoo size, colours, ink depth and your body's healing response often have a greater influence than the type of laser used. #### Does Pico laser require fewer treatments? Some tattoos may respond in fewer sessions, but this cannot be guaranteed. Every tattoo fades at a different rate. #### Is Q-switched tattoo removal still effective? Yes. Q-switched laser technology remains an effective and widely used option for treating many unwanted tattoos. #### Can al... --- ## Hormonal Acne Treatment: Understanding Your Prescription Options URL: Hormonal acne can be one of the most frustrating types of acne to manage. Unlike occasional breakouts, it often **persists into adulthood**, follows a** cyclical pattern** and **may not respond well to over-the-counter skincare alone**. Fortunately, there are several prescription treatment options that can help manage hormonal acne by **targeting the underlying hormonal influences **rather than simply treating the spots themselves. In this guide, we'll explain how hormonal acne develops, explore the most commonly prescribed treatment options and discuss **why a personalised treatment plan is essential** for achieving the best results. ## What Is Hormonal Acne? Hormonal acne develops when** hormones, particularly androgens, stimulate the skin's oil glands **to produce excess sebum. Combined with blocked pores and inflammation, this creates an environment where acne can develop. Although it is often associated with teenagers, hormonal acne is **common in adults, particularly women.** It frequently affects the: - Chin - Jawline - Lower cheeks - Neck Many people notice their acne **worsens around their menstrual cycle, during times of stress or with hormonal changes** such as pregnancy or menopause. Because **not all adult acne is hormonal, **an accurate diagnosis is the first step towards choosing the most appropriate treatment. ## How Do I Know If My Acne Is Hormonal? Hormonal acne often has a recognisable pattern. While only a **medical assessment can confirm the underlying cause, **certain signs may suggest that hormones are contributing to your breakouts. Hormonal acne commonly: - Develops around the chin, jawline and lower cheeks. - Flares around your menstrual cycle. - Persists into adulthood, even if you didn't have acne as a teenager. - Consists of deep, tender spots or cysts beneath the skin. - Returns despite following a consistent skincare routine. - May be associated with hormonal conditions such as polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). It's important to remember that **not all acne affecting the jawline is hormonal,** and not everyone with hormonal acne will experience all of these symptoms. During your consultation, we'll assess your skin, discuss your medical history and identify the factors contributing to your breakouts before recommending the most appropriate treatment plan. ## Why Hormonal Acne Often Needs a Different Approach Traditional acne treatments focus on reducing bacteria, unclogging pores and controlling inflammation**. **While these treatments remain important, they **don't always address the hormonal triggers** **responsible **for persistent breakouts. For some patients, **prescription hormonal treatments can help regulate these underlying influences, **reducing excess oil production and preventing future breakouts. The most suitable treatment depends on your medical history, symptoms, future pregnancy plans and previous acne treatments. ## The Oral Contraceptive Pill For some women, the combined oral contraceptive pill can be an effective option for managing hormonal acne. #### How Does It Work? Certain combined contraceptive pills help **regulate hormone levels and reduce the effects of androgens, **which can decrease oil production and improve acne over time. #### Who Might Benefit? This option may be considered for women who: - Experience cyclical acne. - Have acne linked to hormonal fluctuations. - Also require contraception. #### Things to Consider The oral contraceptive pill is not suitable for everyone and requires an assessment of your medical history. Improvements usually develop gradually over several months rather than immediately. ## Topical Anti-Androgen Treatment (Winlevi) A newer prescription option for hormonal acne is Winlevi® (clascoterone cream), a topical anti-androgen treatment applied directly to the skin. #### How Does It Work? Unlike oral medication, Winlevi works **within the skin to reduce the effects of androgens** around the oil glands. This helps control excess sebum production** without treating the whole body.** #### Who Might Benefit? Topical anti-androgen treatment may be suitable for patients who: - Have mild to moderate hormonal acne. - Prefer a topical prescription treatment. - Are looking to reduce oil production while maintaining a simple skincare routine. #### Things to Consider Winlevi is a prescription-only medication and is often used alongside other acne treatments to achieve the best results. As with many prescription treatments, improvements develop gradually and consistency is important. ## Spironolactone Spironolactone is another prescription medication that is increasingly used to manage hormonal acne. #### How Does It Work? Spironolactone works by **reducing the effects of androgens on the skin,** helping to decrease oil production and reduce inflammatory breakouts. #### Who Might Benefit? It may be recommended for those who: - Have persistent hormonal acne. - Experience frequent jawline and chi... --- ## Is Laser Hair Removal Permanent? What to Expect from Treatment URL: One of the most common questions patients ask before starting laser hair removal is whether the results are permanent. While laser treatment can **significantly reduce unwanted hair **growth, it's important to understand how it works and what results you can realistically expect. Laser hair removal offers **long-term hair reduction** by targeting hair follicles during their active growth phase. Many patients enjoy smoother skin and a reduced need for shaving or waxing**,** but results vary depending on factors such as hair colour, skin type and hormonal influences. At Dr.Derme, we provide** [personalised laser hair removal treatments](https://drderme.com/treatment/laser-hair-removal-birmingham-edgbaston/) **designed to achieve long-term hair reduction while helping you make informed decisions about your treatment journey. ## What Is Laser Hair Removal? Laser hair removal uses concentrated light energy to** target pigment within the hair follicle**. The energy is absorbed by the hair, **helping to damage the follicle **and reduce its ability to produce future hair growth. Unlike shaving or waxing, which remove hair temporarily, laser treatment **works beneath the skin's surface **to target the source of hair growth. Because hair grows in cycles, multiple treatment sessions are required to effectively treat hairs during their active growth stage. ## Is Laser Hair Removal Permanent? Laser hair removal is **widely recognised for providing long-term hair reduction** rather than guaranteed permanent hair removal. Many treated hair follicles produce** little or no hair **after treatment, while others may eventually produce** finer, lighter hairs over time.** This is why healthcare professionals often use the term _long-term hair reduction_ rather than permanent hair removal. For many patients, the results are long-lasting, with significantly less hair growth and less reliance on shaving or waxing. Occasional maintenance treatments may be recommended to help maintain your results. ## Why Doesn't Every Hair Disappear? Several factors influence how well laser hair removal works and why **multiple treatments are usually required.** #### Hair Growth Cycles Hair grows in three different stages, and laser treatment is most effective during the **active growth phase (anagen).** Because **not all hairs are actively growing at the same time**, a series of treatments is needed to target each follicle at the right stage. #### Hair Colour Laser treatment is generally **most effective on darker hairs **because they contain more pigment to absorb the laser energy. Lighter, grey or white hairs may respond differently or not at all. #### Skin Type Treatment settings are adjusted **to suit your skin type**, helping to maximise both safety and effectiveness. #### Hormonal Factors Hormonal changes, certain medical conditions and some medications can influence future hair growth. In these cases, **maintenance treatments may be beneficial** to help manage ongoing hair growth. ## How Many Sessions Will I Need? The number of treatments required varies depending on the treatment area, hair characteristics and your individual response. Most patients require **a course of treatments spaced several weeks apart** to coincide with the hair growth cycle. Larger body areas and hormonally influenced areas may require additional sessions compared with smaller treatment areas. Your practitioner will recommend a** personalised treatment plan** based on your skin type, hair growth pattern and treatment goals. ## How Long Do Results Last? Many patients enjoy long-lasting hair reduction following a complete course of treatment. Hair that does regrow is often **finer, lighter and less noticeable** than before. Results vary between individuals, and factors such as** hormones, age and genetics can influence** future hair growth. Some patients choose occasional maintenance sessions to help preserve smoother skin over time. ## How Can You Achieve the Best Results? Following your recommended treatment plan can help maximise your results. Helpful tips include: - Attend all scheduled treatment sessions. - Avoid waxing, plucking or epilating between appointments, as these methods remove the hair follicle that the laser needs to target. - Shave the treatment area as advised before your appointment. - Protect treated skin from excessive sun exposure. - Follow all aftercare instructions provided by your practitioner. **Consistency throughout your treatment course **gives you the best opportunity for achieving long-term hair reduction. ## Can Hair Grow Back After Laser Hair Removal? Many patients notice a significant reduction in hair growth following a full course of treatment. However, some hair may gradually return over time, particularly due to hormonal changes, ageing or genetics.** Any regrowth is often finer, lighter and less noticeable** than before treatment. For patients looking to maintain their results long term, oc... --- ## How Long Does Acne Scar Treatment Take? What to Expect URL: Acne scars** can remain long after active breakouts have cleared**, leaving many people wondering how long treatment will take and when they can expect to see improvements. While it's natural to want quick results, treating acne scars is usually a **gradual process** that requires patience and a personalised approach. The length of treatment** varies from person to person **and depends on factors such as the type of scarring, the severity of the scars and the [treatment methods](https://drderme.com/best-treatment-for-acne-scars-uk-treatment-comparison/) used. At Dr.Derme, we create **personalised treatment plans **designed to improve skin texture and support long-term skin renewal while helping patients understand what to realistically expect throughout their treatment journey. ## Why Does Acne Scar Treatment Take Time? Unlike active acne, acne scars are **permanent structural changes **within the skin. They develop when **inflammation damages collagen**, causing the skin to heal unevenly. Professional treatments work by **encouraging the skin's natural repair processes **and stimulating collagen production. Because collagen takes time to develop and remodel, improvements occur gradually rather than immediately. This means that while many patients begin to notice positive changes as treatment progresses, the skin continues to improve over the weeks and months following treatment. ## What Factors Affect Treatment Time? Every patient's skin is different, which is why treatment timelines vary considerably. #### Type of Acne Scar Different acne scars respond differently to treatment. Some scar types **may improve more quickly than others**, while deeper or more established scars often require a longer treatment course. #### Severity of Scarring Patients with more widespread or severe acne scarring **typically require more treatments** than those with milder textural changes. #### Skin Type Individual** skin characteristics, healing response **and collagen production all influence how quickly improvements develop. #### Treatment Approach Some patients achieve excellent results with a single treatment modality, while others **may benefit from combining different treatments **as part of a personalised treatment plan. ## **How Many Treatments Might Be Needed?** Most acne scar treatments involve a **course of sessions** rather than a single appointment. Your practitioner will recommend a treatment plan based on factors such as: - The type of acne scars - The extent of the scarring - Your skin type - Your treatment goals - How your skin responds throughout the treatment course Appointments are spaced apart to **allow the skin time to heal **and for collagen remodelling to take place between treatments. ## When Will You Start Seeing Results? One of the most common questions patients ask is when they'll begin to notice improvements. While **every patient responds differently**, acne scar treatment is typically a gradual process. Rather than seeing dramatic overnight changes, many patients notice their skin becoming **progressively smoother and more even** as treatment continues. Collagen production continues after each session, meaning improvements may continue developing even after your treatment course has finished. Having **realistic expectations is an important part **of achieving a positive treatment experience. ## Can Acne Scar Treatments Be Combined? Yes. Because **acne scars can vary in depth, texture and appearance,** combining different treatments may sometimes provide the best overall results. Depending on your skin and concerns, your personalised treatment plan may include: - [Laser treatments](https://drderme.com/treatment/laser-clinic-edgbaston-birmingham/) - [Microneedling](https://drderme.com/treatment/microneedling/) - [Chemical peels](https://drderme.com/treatment/chemical-peels-birmingham-acne-pigmentation-redness/) - [Medical-grade skincare](https://drderme.com/our-products/) - Prescription treatments (where appropriate) Not every patient requires combination treatments, but using different approaches can sometimes help address multiple aspects of acne scarring more effectively than relying on a single treatment alone. ## What Can You Do to Support Your Results? Although professional treatments play an important role, there are several ways you can help support your skin throughout the treatment process. #### Follow Your Aftercare Advice Following your practitioner's aftercare instructions **helps support healing** and allows your skin to recover between treatments. #### Protect Your Skin from the Sun Daily SPF is important during acne scar treatment, as UV exposure can affect healing and** contribute to pigmentation changes.** #### Use Recommended Skincare Medical-grade skincare may be recommended to** complement your treatment plan** and support skin renewal. #### Attend Your Scheduled Appointments Completing your recommended treatment course allows col... --- ## HTML Sitemap URL: # HTML Sitemap Find treatments, clinic information, skincare products and skin-health articles from Dr.Derme. - [Treatments](#sitemap-treatment) - [Clinic information](#sitemap-pages) - [Skincare products](#sitemap-product) - [Article topics](#sitemap-categories) - [Product categories](#sitemap-product_cat) - [Skin-health articles](#sitemap-posts) [Back to sitemap sections](#sitemap-top) [Back to sitemap sections](#sitemap-top) [Back to sitemap sections](#sitemap-top) [Back to sitemap sections](#sitemap-top) [Back to sitemap sections](#sitemap-top) [Back to sitemap sections](#sitemap-top) --- ## Hay Fever Blood Testing: How Pollen Allergy Testing Works URL: Hay fever** affects millions of people across the UK each year, **causing symptoms that can range from mildly irritating to significantly impacting daily life. While many people recognise the classic signs of hay fever, such as sneezing and itchy eyes, it isn't always easy to know whether pollen is the cause. Similar symptoms can also be associated with colds, sinus infections, or other allergies. Understanding how hay fever diagnosis works can help you make informed decisions about your health. One option that may be recommended is a [pollen allergy blood test](https://drderme.com/category/treatment-guide/blood-testing/), which measures your immune response to specific pollen allergens. ## What Is Hay Fever? Hay fever, also known as **allergic rhinitis**, occurs when the** immune system reacts to pollen **that would normally be harmless. When someone with hay fever comes into contact with pollen, their immune system** produces antibodies that trigger the release of histamine **and other chemicals, leading to allergy symptoms. There are three main types of pollen that commonly trigger hay fever: - Tree pollen, which is usually highest during spring. - Grass pollen, often the most common cause of hay fever during late spring and summer. - Weed pollen, which is more common during late summer and early autumn. Because **different plants release pollen at different times of the year,** symptoms can vary depending on which pollen allergens you're sensitive to. ## Common Symptoms of Hay Fever Hay fever symptoms vary from person to person and can range from mild to more persistent. Common symptoms include: - Sneezing - A runny or blocked nose - Itchy or watery eyes - Itchy throat, nose or ears - Coughing - Facial pressure or sinus discomfort - Reduced sense of smell - Fatigue caused by ongoing symptoms or disturbed sleep These symptoms are often worse during periods of **high pollen counts and may occur seasonally, **although some people experience symptoms over a longer period depending on the allergens involved. ## How Is Hay Fever Diagnosed? A hay fever diagnosis usually begins with a **discussion about your symptoms, **when they occur, and whether there appears to be a seasonal pattern. **Your healthcare professional **may also ask about your family history, any known triggers, and any current medications or previous allergy testing. If an allergy is suspected, **further testing may be recommended **to help identify which allergens may be contributing to your symptoms. Two commonly used methods include: - **Skin prick testing,** where small amounts of allergens are introduced to the skin to observe an immediate reaction. - **Pollen allergy blood testing,** which measures specific IgE antibodies associated with allergic reactions. The most appropriate test will depend on your symptoms, medical history, and individual circumstances. ## How Does a Pollen Allergy Blood Test Work? [A pollen allergy blood test ](https://drderme.com/allergy-testing-what-is-it-how-it-works/)is a **straightforward way of assessing your immune response** to selected pollen allergens. During the appointment, a small blood sample is taken and sent to a specialist laboratory. The sample is **analysed for specific IgE antibodies, **which are produced when the immune system reacts to particular allergens. The results can show whether your immune system has produced IgE antibodies to the pollen allergens included in your chosen test. At Dr.Derme Edgbaston, we offer pollen allergy blood testing in clinic. If you would like further support understanding your results, you also have the option to book an additional consultation with one of our doctors for personalised interpretation and guidance. ## What Can Pollen Allergy Testing Check For? Depending on the testing option selected, pollen allergy testing can assess reactions to a range of common seasonal allergens. The allergens included will depend on the individual test or allergy profile selected. #### Tree Pollens Testing may include common tree pollens such as birch, alder, and hazel. These pollens are often responsible for symptoms during early spring. #### Grass Pollens Grass pollen is one of the most common causes of hay fever in the UK. Testing may include allergens such as timothy grass, rye grass, and meadow grasses. These typically cause symptoms during late spring and summer. #### Weed Pollens Some people experience symptoms later in the year due to weed pollens, including mugwort, ragweed, and plantain. ## Choosing the Right Allergy Testing Option Everyone's symptoms are different, which is why we offer several testing options depending on your needs. #### Individual Allergen Testing Ideal if you suspect[ one specific pollen allergen](https://drderme.com/individual-allergy-testing-uk-targeted-approach/) is responsible for your symptoms. #### 5 Allergen Panel Suitable for those who want to investigate a small number of suspected pollen allergens.... --- ## Cookie Policy URL: # Cookie Policy --- ## Is Laser Hair Removal Safe for Skin of Colour? URL: If you have a darker skin tone and are considering laser hair removal, you may be wondering whether the treatment is **safe, effective or suitable **for your skin. If you've searched _"Is laser hair removal safe for dark skin?"_ or _"Can Black or Asian skin have laser hair removal?"_, you're certainly not alone. Historically, older laser technologies were not always suitable for darker skin tones because they could **struggle to distinguish between pigment** in the hair and pigment in the surrounding skin. This increased the risk of unwanted side effects. Advances in laser technology have significantly improved treatment options, allowing many people with darker skin tones to achieve excellent results safely when treatment is carried out appropriately. Every person's skin is unique, which is why **treatment should always begin with a professional consultation**. Assessing your skin type, hair characteristics and medical history helps ensure treatment is tailored to your individual needs while prioritising both safety and effectiveness. ## Why Do People Worry About Laser Hair Removal on Darker Skin? People with skin of colour often worry about: - Burns - Changes in skin pigmentation - Scarring - Whether treatment will actually work These are understandable concerns, but they also highlight why **choosing an experienced clinic** is so important. A personalised assessment, appropriate treatment settings and careful planning all play an essential role in helping minimise risks while achieving effective hair reduction. ## Will Laser Hair Removal Burn My Skin? One of the biggest concerns patients have is whether laser hair removal can burn darker skin. While burns are a recognised risk with any laser treatment if inappropriate equipment or settings are used, **modern laser technology has greatly improved **safety for darker skin tones. An experienced practitioner will **carefully assess your skin before treatment **and will perform a patch test to help determine the most suitable treatment settings. They will also provide pre-treatment advice and aftercare instructions designed to support a safe treatment journey. Choosing a reputable clinic that tailors treatment to your individual skin type is one of the best ways to reduce the risk of complications. ## Does Laser Hair Removal Work on Darker Skin Tones? **Yes**. Many people with skin of colour achieve excellent results from [laser hair removal.](https://drderme.com/treatment/laser-hair-removal-birmingham-edgbaston/) The success of treatment depends on several factors, including your** hair colour, thickness and natural hair growth cycle**. Because hair grows in different stages, multiple treatment sessions are usually needed to achieve the best possible reduction. During your consultation, your practitioner will explain what results you can realistically expect based on your individual skin and hair characteristics. ## Can Laser Hair Removal Cause Hyperpigmentation or Scarring? Temporary changes in skin pigmentation can sometimes occur following laser treatments, particularly if the skin becomes irritated or if aftercare advice isn't followed. However, these side effects are **uncommon when treatment is performed appropriately.** Scarring is also uncommon following laser hair removal when carried out by experienced practitioners using suitable treatment settings. For many women, this can affect confidence, become time-consuming to manage and have a significant impact on day-to-day life. While laser hair removal **doesn't treat the underlying hormonal imbalance** that causes PCOS, it can be an effective way to manage unwanted facial and body hair. If you're considering treatment, understanding what to expect can help you make an informed decision. In this guide, we answer some of the most common questions about PCOS and laser hair removal, including how it works, what results you can expect and when it's important to seek medical advice. ## Why Does PCOS Cause Excess Hair Growth? PCOS is** one of the most common hormonal conditions **affecting women of reproductive age. Among its many symptoms, it can cause** increased levels of hormones** called androgens, which **may stimulate thicker, darker hair growth** in areas where women don't typically expect it. Common areas affected include: - Chin - Upper lip - Jawline - Neck - Chest - Abdomen - Back Not everyone with PCOS experiences unwanted hair growth, and the severity varies from person to person. However, if it does occur, it's important to remember that **you're not alone** and that there are treatment options available to help manage it. ## Can Laser Hair Removal Help with PCOS? **Yes**, laser hair removal can help reduce unwanted hair caused by PCOS. Rather than treating the hormonal condition itself, laser hair removal** targets the hair follicles to reduce future hair growth**. Over a course of treatments, many patients notice slower regrowth, finer hairs and a reduction in the amount of hair that returns. Because PCOS is an ongoing hormonal condition, it's important to have realistic expectations. Laser hair removal **helps manage the symptom of unwanted hair growth**, but it doesn't prevent the body from producing the hormones that contribute to it. ## Common Misconceptions About PCOS and Laser Hair Removal **❌ Myth:** Laser hair removal cures PCOS.** ✔ Fact: **Laser hair removal helps manage unwanted hair growth, but it doesn't treat the underlying hormonal condition. **❌ Myth: **It won't work if you have PCOS.** ✔ Fact: **Many people with PCOS achieve excellent results, although additional sessions or maintenance treatments may be recommended. **❌ Myth: **Hair growing back means the treatment has failed.** ✔ Fact: **Hormonal changes can stimulate new hair growth over time. Maintenance sessions are often part of managing PCOS-related hair growth. ## Are Results Different for People with PCOS? Many patients with PCOS achieve excellent results from laser hair removal, but treatment can differ slightly compared with someone who doesn't have a hormonal condition. Hormonal stimulation **may continue to encourage new hair growth** over time, meaning some patients require: - More treatment sessions to achieve their desired results. - Maintenance treatments to help manage future hair growth. - A treatment plan tailored to their individual hair growth pattern. Everyone responds differently, which is why **personalised treatment planning is so important.** ## Is PCOS the Only Hormonal Condition That Causes Excess Hair Growth? **No**. Although PCOS is one of the most common causes of unwanted facial and body hair, it's not the only one. Other **hormonal changes and medical conditions** can also contribute to excessive hair growth. For example, some women notice increased facial hair around the menopause, while others may experience changes related to different hormonal imbalances or medications. Regardless of the underlying cause, **identifying why the hair growth has developed is just as important **as deciding how to manage it. ## Can Laser Hair Removal Help with Other Hormonal Hair Growth? **In many cases, yes.** Whether unwanted hair is linked to PCOS, another hormonal condition or hormonal changes later in life, laser hair removal may help reduce visible hair growth and make ongoing management easier. However, because hormones continue to influence the hair growth cycle, some patients** may require occasional maintenance treatments** to maintain their results. Your consultation is an opportunity to discuss your **medical history, treatment goals **and what you can realistically expect based on your individual circumstances. ## When Should You Seek Medical Advice About Excess Hair Growth? Not all unwanted hair growth is caused by PCOS. If your hair growth has **developed suddenly, becomes rapidly worse** or is accompanied by symptoms such as irregular periods, persistent acne, scalp hair thinning or unexplained weight changes, it's** important to seek medical assessment.** **Understanding the underlying cause** allows you to receive appropriate advice and treatment where needed, whil... --- ## Thankyou URL: # Thank You ## Thanks for your enquiry! ** A member of our team will be in touch to discuss your skin concerns and schedule a consultation.** If you'd prefer to hear back sooner, please message us on WhatsApp. [ Chat With Us On WhatsApp ](https://wa.link/24fs3z) --- ## Bridal Sebaceous Hyperplasia Removal: Faiza’s Journey to Wedding-Ready Skin URL: Planning a wedding is filled with **excitement**; the dress, the venue, the photographs that will last a lifetime. But it can also bring attention to **small details** that might otherwise go unnoticed. **Sebaceous hyperplasia** removal became an important part of Faiza’s wedding preparation as she began planning for her big day. Although harmless, these **tiny facial bumps **can affect skin texture and how makeup sits on the skin. With professional photography and bridal makeup on the horizon, she wanted her complexion to look smooth, even and radiant. This is her story of **sebaceous hyperplasia removal** and how careful preparation helped her feel confident on her wedding day. ## The Problem: Uneven Skin Texture Before the Big Day Sebaceous hyperplasia appears as **small yellowish or skin-coloured bumps **caused by enlarged oil glands. They are common on the face, particularly on the forehead and cheeks. For Faiza, the concern wasn’t medical, it was about **bridal confidence.** She wondered: - Would makeup sit smoothly over the bumps? - Would they show in close-up wedding photographs? - Could treatment leave pigmentation on her skin? These are common questions brides ask when considering sebaceous hyperplasia removal before their wedding. ## Finding the Right Clinic for Sebaceous Hyperplasia Removal Faiza visited [Dr.Derme Skin Clinics in Edgbaston](https://drderme.com/our-clinics/), a **dermatologist-led clinic** experienced in treating sebaceous hyperplasia safely and effectively. From the first consultation, the focus was clear: the goal was not simply to remove the bumps, but to plan treatment around Faiza’s wedding timeline. That meant: - **Preparing** the skin before treatment - **Removing** the lesions gently - Allowing enough **healing** time before the wedding This **structured approach is essential** for successful sebaceous hyperplasia removal when a bride’s big day is approaching. ## Step One: Preparing the Skin to Prevent Pigmentation Before any treatment took place, Faiza’s skin was prepared with **[medical-grade skincare.](https://drderme.com/our-products/)** This preparation helped to: - **Strengthen** the skin barrier - **Reduce** inflammation after treatment - **Lower** the risk of post-treatment pigmentation Preparing the skin first is a **crucial step** when planning sebaceous hyperplasia removal, particularly for facial treatments before an important event like a wedding. ## Step Two: Gentle Sebaceous Hyperplasia Removal Once the skin was ready, the sebaceous hyperplasia bumps were **removed carefully** using techniques designed to **minimise trauma** to the surrounding skin. The aim of sebaceous hyperplasia removal in a bridal setting is simple: - Smooth the skin texture - Allow makeup to sit evenly - Ensure the skin heals naturally Because the treatment was performed well ahead of the wedding, the skin had time to settle fully before the big day. ## Step Three: Long-Term Skin Health With Retinol After the skin healed, Faiza began using **retinol** as part of her skincare routine. Retinol helps: - Regulate oil gland activity - Improve overall skin texture - Reduce the chance of sebaceous hyperplasia returning - Lower the risk of pigmentation developing Introducing retinol after sebaceous hyperplasia removal helps **maintain long-term skin health and clarity.** ## The Result: Smooth, Wedding-Ready Skin By the time Faiza’s wedding arrived, the results were exactly what she had hoped for. - The sebaceous hyperplasia bumps had been removed - Her skin texture looked smoother and more refined - Makeup applied beautifully - Her confidence in front of the camera was restored Instead of worrying about skin texture, Faiza could **focus on celebrating** her special day. ## Considering Sebaceous Hyperplasia Removal Before Your Wedding? Faiza’s story highlights an important message for brides: **start early and plan carefully**. If you are preparing for your wedding and have concerns about **facial bumps** or **uneven skin texture**, sebaceous hyperplasia removal should be timed well in advance to allow proper healing. While skincare products may help improve some forms of pigmentation, deeper or more persistent pigmentation concerns often require **professional treatment.** [Laser and IPL treatments](https://drderme.com/treatment/laser-clinic-edgbaston-birmingham/) offer a** non-surgical approach** to targeting excess pigment within the skin, helping to restore a brighter, more even-looking complexion. At Dr.Derme, we provide personalised pigmentation treatments tailored to your skin type, concerns and treatment goals. ## What Types of Pigmentation Can Laser Treatments Help Improve? Laser and IPL treatments can help improve a** variety of pigmentation concerns**, depending on the underlying cause and depth of pigmentation. #### Sun Spots Also known as solar lentigines, sun spots **commonly develop after years of UV exposure** and often appear on the face, chest and hands. #### Age Spots Age spots are areas of darker pigmentation that become **more noticeable over time** due to cumulative sun exposure and ageing. #### Freckles Some patients choose pigmentation treatments to reduce the appearance of freckles or create a** more even skin tone.** #### Uneven Skin Tone **Diffuse pigmentation** and areas of uneven skin tone can often be improved with targeted light-based treatments. #### Post-Inflammatory Pigmentation Pigmentation left behind following **acne, irritation or skin inflammation** may also respond to professional pigmentation treatments. **A consultation is important** to determine the most suitable treatment approach for your specific pigmentation concerns. ## How Does Laser Pigmentation Removal Work? The light energy is **absorbed by the darker pigment,** helping to break it down into smaller particles. Over time, **the body** **naturally clears **these particles through its normal healing processes. As treatment progresses, pigmentation can **gradually appear lighter and less noticeable**, helping to improve overall skin clarity and tone. Treatment settings are adjusted based on factors such as your skin type, pigmentation depth and individual concerns to help achieve safe and effective results. ## Who Is Suitable for Laser Pigmentation Treatment? A personalised consultation helps determine the **most appropriate treatment plan** and realistic expectations for your skin. ## What Does Treatment Feel Like? Most patients find laser pigmentation treatment **very manageable**. During treatment, you may experience a **mild warming or snapping sensation** against the skin as the light energy is delivered. Treatment **sessions are typically quick**, depending on the size of the area being treated, and cooling measures may be used to help maximise comfort throughout the procedure. Individual experiences vary, but most patients tolerate treatment well and are able to return to their normal activities shortly afterwards. ## How Many Sessions Might Be Needed? The number of treatments required depends on several factors, including: 1. The type of pigmentation 2. Pigmentation depth 3. Skin type 4. Severity of the concern 5. Many patients notice: - Improved skin clarity - A brighter complexion - Reduced visible pigmentation - More even skin tone - Healthier-looking skin overall Results **vary depending on the pigmentation** being treated and individual skin response, but most patients see** progressive improvement over a course** of treatments. ## Is There Any Downtime After Treatment? However, brow trends, personal preferences and even the appearance of tattoo pigment can change over time. If your eyebrow tattoo has** faded unevenly, changed colour or no longer suits** the look you want,[ **eyebrow tattoo removal**](https://drderme.com/treatment/microblading-semi-permanent-makeup-removal-birmingham/) may help to reduce unwanted pigment. Laser treatment can be used to** target cosmetic tattoo pigment gradually**, whether your aim is significant removal or simply enough fading to prepare the area for new brows. Here, we explain how laser eyebrow tattoo removal works, what can affect your results and what to expect from the treatment process. ## Why Do People Choose Eyebrow Tattoo Removal? People consider eyebrow tattoo removal for many reasons. Pigment may have** faded or changed colour**, the original **shape may no longer suit you**, or you may be **unhappy with the finished result**. In other cases, the aim may simply be to** lighten existing pigment** before having new or corrective brows. ## How Does Laser Eyebrow Tattoo Removal Work? Laser eyebrow tattoo removal works by **delivering controlled light energy into the unwanted pigment** within the skin. The tattoo **pigment absorbs this energy and is broken down** into smaller particles. The body can then gradually process these particles following treatment, causing the tattoo to fade progressively. The response to treatment varies because cosmetic tattoo pigments can contain different colours and ingredients. Factors such as the **colour, depth and amount of pigment** can all influence how an eyebrow tattoo responds to laser treatment. For this reason, a **professional assessment is an important part** of the process before treatment begins. ## Can All Eyebrow Tattoos Be Removed? Not every eyebrow tattoo responds in the same way, and** complete removal cannot be guaranteed.** Results can be influenced by the colour and composition of the pigment, its depth, the age of the tattoo, previous touch-ups and individual skin characteristics. Some people want as much pigment removed as possible, while others simply want their brows lightened before a new treatment. Following an assessment, **your practitioner can discuss what may realistically be achievable** for you. ## How Many Eyebrow Tattoo Removal Sessions Will I Need? The number of treatments needed will **vary from person to person**, as eyebrow tattoo pigments can respond differently to laser treatment. Factors such as the colour, depth and density of the pigment, as well as how long the tattoo has been in place, can all influence the process. Laser removal takes place gradually, with time left between appointments to allow the skin to recover and the treated pigment to fade. **Your end goal matters too.** You may want to lighten your brows in preparation for a new cosmetic treatment, rather than work towards removing as much pigment as possible. This will be taken into account when planning your course of treatment. ## What's the Difference Between Eyebrow Tattoos and Microblading? Eyebrow tattooing generally uses a **machine to deposit pigment**, with techniques such as powder or ombré brows creating a** shaded finish**. Microblading uses a **handheld tool** to create fine, hair-like strokes. These differences can influence how the pigment responds to laser treatment. [If you have microblading rather than a machine-applied eyebrow tattoo, read our dedicated **microblading removal guide** for more information about how the treatment process differs.](https://drderme.com/microblading-removal-laser-tattoo-removal/) ## Is Eyebrow Tattoo Removal Safe? [Laser eyebrow tattoo removal](https://drderme.com/treatment/microblading-semi-permanent-makeup-removal-birmingham/) may be suitable for many people when performed following an** appropriate consultation and assessment.** Because treatment takes place close to the eyes, appropriate safety measures and professional treatment are particularly important. Treatment settings should be selected according to** your skin and the characteristics of the pigment** being treated. You'll also receive aftercare advice to help support the skin as it recovers. As with any laser procedure, there are potential risks and side effects, which should be discussed with you before you decide to proceed. ## What Happens Before Treatment? Before treatment, your practitioner will **assess your skin and eyebrow tattoo**, discuss previous brow treatments and find out what you would like to achieve. You'll also be given information about what you can realistically expect from treatment. If you are suitable for laser treatment, a **test patch** will also be performed before proceeding with a full treatment. ## Frequently Asked Questions ### Can laser completely remove an eyebrow tattoo? You may also hear facial thread veins referred to as: 1. Broken capillaries 2. Spider veins 3. Facial veins 4. Telangiectasia ## How Does Laser Treatment for Thread Veins Work? The blood vessels absorb the light energy, causing them to gradually **break down and fade** over time. Once treated, the body naturally clears the damaged vessels through its normal healing processes. As the skin heals between sessions, redness and visible veins can appear reduced, helping create a clearer and more even-looking complexion. Treatment settings are **carefully adjusted based on your skin type**, redness severity and the size of the visible vessels being treated. ## What Areas Can Be Treated? The number of treatments required varies depending on: - The severity of redness - The number of visible veins - Vessel size - Skin type - Underlying rosacea or flushing Some** smaller thread veins may respond quickly**, while more extensive redness or vascular concerns may require a course of sessions for optimal improvement. **Results develop gradually** as the skin heals between treatments. ## Is There Downtime After Laser Thread Vein Treatment? Downtime following laser treatment is **usually minimal**. Some patients experience **temporary redness, mild swelling or warmth** immediately after treatment, although this typically settles within a few days. Protecting the skin with** SPF and following aftercare** advice is important to support healing and maintain results. Most patients are able to return to normal activities quickly after treatment. ## What Results Can You Expect? Laser treatments are designed to **gradually reduce** visible thread veins and improve overall skin clarity. Over a course of treatments, many patients notice: - Reduced facial redness - Fading visible veins - A calmer complexion - More even-looking skin tone Results vary depending on the** severity of redness and individual skin response,** although many patients experience noticeable improvement over time. ## Are Facial Thread Veins Preventable? While **not all facial thread veins can be prevented**, there are ways to help minimise the risk of developing additional visible vessels: - Wear daily SPF protection - Avoid excessive sun exposure - Use gentle skincare products - Avoid over-exfoliating the skin - Manage rosacea triggers where possible - Reduce excessive heat exposure [Supporting the skin barrier](https://drderme.com/skincare-routine-causing-redness-top-tips/) and protecting against UV damage can help maintain healthier-looking skin long term. ## Considering Laser Treatment for Facial Thread Veins?
