What is microneedling?

Microneedling, also referred to as skin needling or collagen induction therapy, is a treatment involving small needles that create tiny punctures in the skin. These tiny contact points stimulate the body’s natural wound healing response, prompting the renewal of skin cells. As the skin undergoes repair, the production of collagen and elastin is activated, resulting in a plumping effect. Additionally, microneedling can also address various skin concerns such as scarring, dark marks, sun damage, and signs of aging.

Preparation

We’ll assess your skin type and concerns to determine the best microneedling depth and serums for you. On the day, your skin will be cleansed, and a topical anaesthetic will be applied to ensure comfort during the procedure.

Serum

To maximise the benefits of microneedling, serum is used as a glide and after needling. Actives in the serum help to nourish the skin, promoting effective repair and rejuvenation. The serum penetrates deeply into the skin delivering essential nutrients directly.

Microneedling

A microneedling pen with fine needles will create tiny punctures on your skin’s surface. This triggers the body’s natural healing process, stimulating collagen and elastin production. The depth of needle penetration can be adjusted based on your  skin concerns.

What can microneedling treat?

Microneedling is an excellent treatment option, particularly in patients with skin of colour, as it avoids using peels or lasers that may lead to pigmentation issues. Microneedling can be used to treat concerns on both the face and body.  Microneedling is a great treatment option for the following skin concerns:

Pigmentation and dull skin

PB
PA

Acne scarring

ASB
ASA 1

Stretch marks

SMB
SMA

Wrinkles and double chin

DCB
DCA

Types of microneedling treatments

Our doctors at Dr.Derme will help you determine the best microneedling treatment for your concerns:

Dermaroller

Dermaroller is a titanium device rolled over the skin, that generates thousands of tiny contact points, initiating the body’s wound healing process for brighter, smoother, and more youthful-looking skin. Particularly beneficial for clients requiring treatment over larger areas.

Microneedling

Using a pen with an electronic mechanism featuring short needles, this method targets the top layers of the skin, delivering a rejuvenating effect. The lower intensity of this treatment results in minimal downtime compared to deeper procedures, yet it still achieves a youthful complexion.

Medical needling

Our doctors use a needling pen to reach greater depths to treat your specific concerns including scarring and deeper lines. A solution containing hyaluronic acid, minerals, vitamins, and peptides is applied to the skin, stimulating cell proliferation, reducing skin contours, and enhancing elasticity*.

What Microneedling Serum Do You Use?

At Dr. Derme, we offer a variety of serums for microneedling, but our favourite is the Polyvitamins Nutritive Solution. This serum is a powerful antioxidant blend designed to maintain and promote healthy skin by stimulating the skin’s natural cellular processes. It also improves blood circulation and stimulates hair follicle metabolism, making it an excellent choice for both facial and scalp treatments.

  • Smoothes Skin Texture: Promotes a refined and even skin surface.
  • Balances Nutritional Deficiencies: Ensures the skin receives essential vitamins for optimal health.
  • Anti-inflammatory and Antioxidant Effects: Reduces inflammation and protects against free radical damage.
  • Reduces Hyperpigmentation: Helps lighten dark spots and even out skin tone.
  • Improves Blood Circulation: Enhances nutrient and oxygen delivery to the skin.
  • Stimulates Hair Follicle Metabolism: Encourages hair growth and health on the scalp.

Here are the components and their benefits:

  • Retinyl Palmitate (Vitamin A): Promotes cell turnover, smoothes skin texture, evens skin tone and helps reduce fine lines and wrinkles.
  • Thiamine HCL (Vitamin B1): Promotes healthy circulation and has antioxidant properties.
  • Sodium Riboflavin Phosphate (Vitamin B2): Aids in maintaining healthy skin by supporting cellular energy production.
  • Niacinamide (Vitamin B3): Improves skin elasticity, enhances the barrier function, evens skin tone, and diminishes dullness.
  • Panthenol (Vitamin B5): Provides deep hydration, has anti-inflammatory properties, and supports healing.
  • Pyridoxine (Vitamin B6): Helps with skin metabolism and has anti-inflammatory effects.
  • Ascorbic Acid (Vitamin C): Known for its antioxidant properties, it helps brighten the skin, reduce hyperpigmentation, and protect against UV damage.
  • Tocopheryl Acetate (Vitamin E): Acts as a potent antioxidant, protects the skin from free radical damage, and moisturizes the skin.
  • PEG-35 Castor Oil: Enhances the penetration of other ingredients and provides moisturising effects.

Our Polyvitamins Nutritive Solution ensures deep skin nutrition and revitalisation, making it a top choice for microneedling treatments at Dr. Derme.

Proper aftercare is crucial for maximising the benefits of microneedling and ensuring effective healing. Here are some essential steps to follow:

  • Keep the Area Clean: Gently cleanse your face with a warm water to remove any dirt or bacteria. Avoid using harsh products for at least 24 hours post-treatment.
  • Hydration is Key: Apply a gentle, hydrating moisturiser to keep your skin well-hydrated. Hyaluronic acid-based products are particularly beneficial after microneedling.
  • Sun Protection: Use a high-SPF sunscreen to protect your skin from UV damage. Sun exposure can lead to pigmentation issues and compromise the healing process.
  • Avoid Makeup: Refrain from applying makeup for at least 24 hours post-treatment. This allows your skin to breathe and recover without potential irritants.
  • Follow Skincare Recommendations: Adhere to any additional skincare advice provided by our doctors, such as using specific serums or avoiding certain activities like swimming.

Following these steps will help you achieve the best results from your microneedling session and maintain healthy, glowing skin.

To ensure the best results from your microneedling session, there are several activities and products you should avoid:

  • Sun Exposure: Avoid direct sun exposure for at least a week. UV rays can damage the sensitive skin and cause pigmentation issues. Always apply a high-SPF sunscreen when you go outside.
  • Harsh Skincare Products: Steer clear of products containing retinol, AHAs, BHAs, or any other harsh chemicals for at least 48 hours post-treatment. These can irritate your skin and hinder the healing process.
  • Makeup: Do not apply makeup for at least 24 hours to allow your skin to breathe and recover without any potential irritants.
  • Swimming and Excessive Sweating: Avoid swimming pools, saunas, and intense workouts for at least 48 hours. Chlorine and sweat can irritate your freshly treated skin and increase the risk of infection.
  • Touching Your Face: Refrain from touching your face unnecessarily. Your skin is vulnerable after microneedling, and touching it can introduce bacteria and cause breakouts or infections.

Following these guidelines will help ensure a smooth recovery and maximise the benefits of your microneedling session.

Microneedling results can vary based on individual skin conditions and the specific concerns being treated. Generally, you may start to notice improvements in skin texture and tone within a few days to a week after the first microneedling session. More significant results, such as the reduction of scars, fine lines, and wrinkles, typically become visible after 4 to 6 weeks as the skin undergoes its natural healing process and collagen production increases.

For optimal results, our doctors recommend a series of 3 to 6 microneedling treatments spaced about 4 to 6 weeks apart. The number of sessions required depends on the severity of the skin issues being addressed and your individual skin type.

It’s crucial to follow post-treatment care instructions provided by your skincare professional to maximise the benefits of microneedling and ensure proper healing. This includes protecting your skin from the sun and keeping it well-hydrated.
