Manual Extraction

Performed using a sterile needle, manual extraction is often the most effective method. Any milia located near the eye in the ORANGE and RED areas require a doctor’s appointment for extraction. Milia within the RED areas may require our eye surgeon to ensure safe removal. WhatsApp or upload a photo to find out.

Retinoids

Prescription retinoids, when used correctly, are a highly effective treatment option for milia removal. Retinoids work by promoting cell turnover and preventing the clogging of pores. This makes them particularly useful in treating milia, as they help to exfoliate the skin and prevent the formation of these small, keratin-filled cysts.

What Causes Milia?

Milia are small, white bumps that form when dead skin cells (keratin) become trapped beneath the skin’s surface instead of naturally exfoliating. Several factors contribute to the formation of milia:

Skin Trauma

Damage from sunburn, blisters, or other injuries can trigger milia by disrupting the skin’s natural exfoliation process.

Heavy Skincare Products

Using thick, oil-based creams or makeup can clog pores, leading to milia.

Lack of Exfoliation

When dead skin cells accumulate without being removed, they can become trapped, forming milia.

Genetics

Some individuals are more prone to developing milia due to genetic factors.

Can Milia Be Safely Removed in Skin of Colour?

If you have skin of colour (Fitzpatrick skin types IV-VI) and are considering treatments like laser therapy, plasma, or cryotherapy, it’s crucial to take specific precautions to ensure you are in safe hands. These treatments can pose a higher risk of complications such as hyperpigmentation, hypopigmentation, and keloid scarring in darker skin tones.

Cryotherapy

Cryotherapy or cryosurgery uses extreme cold to treat various skin conditions, including the milia removal. During the procedure, liquid nitrogen is applied to the milia, freezing the tiny keratin-filled cysts. This process causes the treated area to scab and then slough off, effectively removing the milia.

Plasma Pen

Plasma Pen Electrodesiccation is a modern technique which safely cauterises and removes milia without direct contact with the skin. This method is particularly gentle on sensitive skin. Plasma pens are known for their precision, making them an excellent choice for milia removal in delicate areas like around the eyes.

Laser Treatment

Laser therapy, such as CO2 laser, can be used for milia removal on sensitive skin. It precisely targets and removes the milia without affecting the surrounding skin. Studies show that laser treatment is highly effective and well-tolerated in patients with sensitive skin.

How Long Does It Take To Recover From Milia Removal By Manual Extraction?

Recovery from milia removal through manual extraction is typically quick and straightforward. Most patients can expect the treated area to heal within a few days to a week. After the procedure, the skin may be slightly red or tender, but these symptoms usually subside within a few days. It’s important to follow post-care instructions provided by your dermatologist, such as keeping the area clean and avoiding sun exposure, to ensure smooth healing and prevent any complications.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

How Can I Prevent Milia?

To prevent milia, it’s essential to maintain a proper skincare routine that promotes regular exfoliation and keeps your pores clear. Use gentle exfoliants, such as glycolic acid or salicylic acid, to remove dead skin cells that can clog pores and lead to milia. Additionally, avoid using heavy, oil-based skincare products that can block pores. Protecting your skin from sun damage by applying a broad-spectrum sunscreen can also help prevent milia, as sunburn can trigger their formation.

For those looking to enhance their skincare routine, incorporating a prescription retinoid can be highly effective. Retinoids help increase cell turnover, preventing the buildup of dead skin cells that contribute to milia. However, retinoids should be used under the guidance of our doctors, as they can cause irritation if not applied correctly.

To develop a comprehensive skincare regimen tailored to your skin’s needs, including the use of prescription retinoids for milia prevention, we recommend scheduling a consultation with our experienced dermatologists. Our doctors can assess your skin type and concerns, providing personalized advice for effective milia removal and long-term prevention.

Milia removal, particularly through manual extraction by a dermatologist, is generally not painful. During the procedure, a small sterile needle is used to gently open the surface of the skin, allowing the milia to be extracted. While you might experience slight discomfort, most patients find the process very tolerable. Your dermatologist may apply a numbing cream to further reduce any discomfort during the procedure.

While some people try home remedies for milia removal, such as exfoliating with over-the-counter products or using warm compresses, these methods are generally not as effective as professional treatments. It’s important to avoid picking or squeezing milia, as this can lead to scarring or infection. For safe and effective milia removal, it’s best to consult with our docotors who can recommend the most appropriate treatment options.
