Cryotherapy

The extremely cold temperature causes the cells within the wart to die, leading it to shrink and eventually fall off within a few days. This method is quick, virtually painless, and requires no downtime, making it a popular choice for safely and effectively removing unwanted warts.

Scraping

Scraping, also known as curettage, is an effective method for removing stubborn or larger warts. This procedure involves using a sterile, specialised instrument called a curette to gently scrape away the wart tissue from the skin’s surface. The procedure is quick and precise, making it suitable for children. After treatment, the area may form a small scab, which will heal naturally over the following days.

What To Do Before Your Child's Appointment

Before your child’s wart or verruca removal appointment, please see the pre-procedure advice below to help you get the most from their treatment.

Step 1 - Soak

Soak the affected hand or foot in warm water for 10-15 minutes.

Step 2 - File

Gently file down the thick, white, dead skin on top of the wart using a clean emery board/pumice stone/foot file. Do not use this file for anything else.

Step 3 - Protect

Protect the surrounding healthy skin with some petroleum jelly (Vaseline), especially in children.

Step 4 - Apply

Apply an over-the-counter wart/verruca treatment containing salicylic acid. Avoid using in children under 18 years old without medical advice from a clinician or pharmacist.

Step 5 - Cover

Cover the wart or verruca with a plaster to help treatment work more effectively and reduce the risk of spreading. Change daily.

Do's and Dont's

Do not use salicylic acid on the face, genitals, or broken skin.
Do not share towels, socks, and shoes.
Do wear flip flops or pool shoes in communal changing areas and swimming pools.
